In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum
Dear Friends
I pray that you are well.
Love is of three types: the love which arises from a feeling of respect and reverence, such as the love of one's parents; the love which arises from compassion and mercy, such as the love of one's child; and the love which arises from seeing in another person's traits which are similar to one's own, such as the love of people in general.
Our love should only for Allah. We love the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, because he is the beloved of Allah. So is our love for the learned and righteous people, as they are the dear ones of the beloved, sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
The Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, said:
"By Him in Whose Hands my life is, none of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father and his children."
Submission is the key to this love. We must train our hearts and our minds to willingly submit to what the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, has brought. The Companions, Allah be pleased with them, used to be alongside the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, in fighting their own fathers, sons and brothers [who were polytheists]. So whosoever finds similar to this in his self then he can be assured that his desires are subservient to that which the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, had brought.
"We sent not a messenger, but to be obeyed, in accordance with the will of God. If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come unto thee and asked God’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found God indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful. But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction" (Qur'an An-Nisaa 4:64-65)
Of the best traits of a believer is love for the sake of Allah and hatred for the sake of Allah. It leads to the perfection of faith and love from Allah. Through it the believer tastes the sweetness of faith. It is of the most sincere works for the sake of Allah.
The Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, said:
"Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith:
1. The one to whom Allah and His Messenger, Allah bless him and grant him peace, becomes dearer than anything else.
2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah's sake.
3. Who hates to revert to kufr (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire." (Bukhari)
One should not be excessive in love nor hate. This is because love for the sake of Allah whose reward is hoped for is but love that is in accordance with the dictates of sacred law. If you love a person for his obedience to Allah, and if he disobeys Allah then you hate him because of his disobedience to Allah. It is reported that the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Love the one you love moderately, perhaps he will be subject to your hatred one day; and hate the one you hate moderately, perhaps he will be subject to your love one day.”
A person should have as many believing acquaintances as he can, as he can benefit from their intercession on Judgment Day. A person should not take as a close friend anyone except those who he is confident about their religion, trustworthiness, righteousness, and Godfearingness.
A person will be with whom he loves, even if his works do not equal theirs. Allah might see the love for someone in the heart of someone close to Him so he has mercy on him. So choose our friends wisely.
It was related in Bukhari that a man came up to the Prophet, sallalahu alayhi wasallam, and asked: “What do you say of a man who loves a certain group of people but cannot be of them?”
To this the Prophet, sallalahu alayhi wasallam, replied: “A person will be with whom he loves”
By a certain group here the man meant those who were learned and pious that he loved these people but did not have the means to be amongst them.
Anas, Allah be pleased with him, mentioned in relation to this hadith: “There was nothing which made us (Companion) happier in this world than to hear this” (Muslim) because they loved the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, greatly, and this hadith indicates that they would be with him in the Hereafter.
May Allah increase our love for His beloved, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and resurrect us with him and enter us into the highest Paradise with him. Ameen. Please don't forget us in your night prayers.
And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
