Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. [Quran, Al Qadr 97:3]

This is a special night where the heavens are opened for the human being and when the Angels come down to say salaam to those who pray during the night.

According to Imam Ar-Razi, laylatul qadr is different for each individual. It is the climax for those who have been praying at night throughout the year and this can happen for someone on any night. It all depends on how dedicated, devoted and focused you are within your prayer and how prepared you came to the month of Ramadhan by seeking for this night throughout the year.

May Allah grant us laylatul qadr. Aameen.

Ramadhan Victory -- Restraining Anger

Ramadhan Victory -- Restraining Anger

Allah Most High says,

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
[Quran, Al A’raf 7:199]

One of  the most comprehensive counsels  given to Allah’s beloved Messenger (ﷺ) and to those who tread the path of being victorious servants of Allah, is to take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant, those who are acting in unreasonable ways, in annoying ways, or in ways likely to upset you. Don’t be angry.

Not getting angry does not mean not being moved when outrage occurs but rather not getting angry refers to not having negative anger for own self or ego. Positive anger is from the Prophetic sunnah, which is when there's something wrong or injustice that requires action, then the believer has positive anger, which is to be moved to rectify the wrong or injustice in order to establish what is right with strength but in a manner pleasing to Allah.

The Prophet (ﷺ) never got angry for his own self but if the limits of Allah or the limits of truth  were transgressed, the Prophet (ﷺ) would be angry but only in the ways that are beautiful and beloved to Allah.

So a key to victory is to control our negative emotions and to channel them only in the ways pleasing to Allah.

Ramadhan Victory -- Charity and Generosity

Ramadhan Victory -- Charity and Generosity

Allah Most High says (in close meanings):

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
[Quran, Al Baqarah 2:261]

The Quran encourages us not to withhold charity reminding us that by not giving we may actually harm ourselves more than anyone else. It is through the act of giving that we prevent the self-destruction of greed, selfishness and clinging to this worldly life. Charity is an active commitment to do good and a reflection of our faith and action as Allah loves those who strive to do good. May Allah make us of those. Charity and generosity are powerful tools for societal transformation. Let’s be generous in our giving for in doing so we follow the way of the Prophet (ﷺ) who has been described as being the most generous of people bearing in mind that he was not a person of abundant worldly wealth and the most generous when he used to meet with Jibril alayhissalaam during the nights in Ramadhan studying and revising the Quran with one another.

Let's Read Surah Kahf Today -- Grateful For The Quran

Let's Read Surah Kahf Today -- Grateful For The Quran

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance.
[Quran, Al Kahf 18:1]

Muslims are people of Alhamdulillah which means we are constantly grateful and constantly positive. If we understood Alhamdulillah we will never be depressed, angry, stressed, nervous, fearful, lose hope or complain.

Ramadhan Victory -- Seeking Knowlledge

Ramadhan Victory -- Seeking Knowlledge

Allah Most HIgh says,
Say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
[Quran, Ta-Ha 20:114]

Seeking knowledge of the religion is a key to both good in our own lives and good in society. The Prophet (ﷺ) tells us whomever Allah wishes well for He grants deep understanding of the religion. Deep understanding of the religion is not only knowing what you need to do for your own personal life but also being able to be of those who advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience, the framework that Allah gives us in Surah Al-Asr.

Having knowledge of the religion gives you clarity in your personal life and enables you to fulfill the rights of your parents, spouse, children, neighbors, families, friends and society, how to go about doing the good in society in ways pleasing to Allah guided by Prophetic principles, how do we stand up to the Truth but in ways that are pleasing to Allah, how  do we stand up for justice but in ways that correspond with Prophetic principles of dignity, being honorable and upholding good character. The key to this is to seek knowledge and to spread knowledge.

How many a person is shaken by the tests and tribulations, by the disasters and devastation. The person of knowledge has light that they can share, by which they can navigate the darkness of the turbulence of this world and they can also give the light of hope, clarity, certitude and conviction. We need to acquire this light of Prophetic knowledge, embody it ourselves and call others to embody it, live it and spread it so that light may spread in the Ummah of the beloved Messenger(ﷺ) and on Allah’s earth.

Ramadhan VIctory -- Uniting In The Path of Righteousness

Ramadhan VIctory -- Uniting In The Path of Righteousness

In Surah AleImran ayah 104, Allah Almighty teaches us a lesson in victory for us as a community of Islam. Allah commands us saying that there should be a group of people who calls towards goodness, actively commanding and encouraging each other towards lives of righteousness with that which is known to be good as dictated by in His sacred law and prohibiting one another from evil that which Allah had declared to be wrong.

Allah calls upon us to rise as a community that actively promotes good, establishes justice and forbid wrongdoing. This is not merely about personal piety but about creating an environment where virtue is encouraged and vice is discouraged.

Enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong are not passive acts but dynamic processes of engagement with our society. It requires us to be proactive in our communities advocating for ethical standards and helping each other uphold them. Our collaboration should be rooted in the consciousness of Allah and the pursuit of His pleasure, and not that of our own, to better our community, and not just for selfish goals.

When we unite in the path of righteousness, we steer our community away from sin and aggression, thus fostering a culture of peace and justice. We become a beacon of light guiding others towards the path of success both in this life and in the Hereafter. May Allah make us victorious in this life and the next. Aameen.

Ramadhan Victory -- Seeking Knowledge

Ramadhan Victory -- Seeking Knowledge

Allah Most High asks us in Surah Zumar, ayat 9,
"Are those who know equal to those who do not know?". Of course that's a rhetorical question. There's no comparison between those who know and those who don't. Our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) tells us whomever Allah wishes well for, he grants deep understanding of religion.

Commit, if you seek victory, to gain beneficial knowledge, the knowledge that shows you with clarity what to believe about Allah, how to submit to Allah in worship and in life, how to seek the pleasure of Allah in your worship and devotion in your living, work, family and society, how to be a truly grateful servant of Allah, how to be a servant that is of true benefit to others.

“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” It is the scholars that are the inheritors of the Prophets.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said the scholar and the student are partners in all that is truly good. So let us be of those who seek beneficial knowledge to better our condition, to better our turning to Allah, to better serve the way of the Prophet (ﷺ), to be victorious in ourselves, in our social relationships, and to give victory to the Ummah through the preservation and transmission, and support for the way of light, that is the way of the beloved Messenger (ﷺ) who said. “I was only sent as a teacher.”

Ramadhan Victory -- Reliance Upon Allah (Tawakkul)

Ramadhan Victory -- Reliance Upon Allah (Tawakkul)

Allah Almighty says,

And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
[Quran, At-Talaq 65:3]

Tawakkul is a means to Allah’s pleasure and reward and is among the greatest blessings we have that enable us to nurture and maintain our faith. It inspires hope, contentment with divine decree, and confidence during all times and situations, particularly during moments of fear and uncertainty. Allah promises to “provide for the believer from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him.” The believer sees that all matters are in the hands of Allah. We, the servants, take the means but all outcomes are in the hands of Allah. So, as believers, we don’t worry as to where the means will come. We determine the right course of action and pursue it, and we don’t fear about what is going to happen.

We plan correctly and once we resolve, then place our trust in Allah and that is strength.

Ramadhan Victory -- Repentance

Ramadhan Victory -- Repentance

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know. [Quran, AleImran 3:135]

Repentance is a quality of a humble servant of Allah. Allah loves those who when they commit a wrong or wrong themselves, they remember Allah and seek His forgiveness for their sins.

Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant.  [Quran, Al Baqarah 2:222]

Never despair of Allah’s Mercy. If you are struggling know that you're not alone.  Seek knowledge and seek good company. Consult the people of knowledge for they are doctors. Our duty is not to be popular with Scholars or with teachers but rather to see them as doctors that we go to for treatment.

May Allah grant us to be of the of repentant. Aameen.

Ramadhan Victory -- Honoring & Pleasing Your Parents

Ramadhan Victory -- Honoring & Pleasing Your Parents

The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

Whoever comes into the morning and both his parents are pleased with him, he comes into the morning with two doors of Paradise open to him. Whoever goes into the evening and both parents are pleased with him, he goes into the evening with two doors of Paradise open for him. And if he has just one parent, then one door of Paradise is open to him. Whoever comes into the morning and both his parents are angry with him, he comes into the morning with two doors of hellfire open to him. Whoever goes into the evening with both parents are angry with him, he goes into the evening with two doors of hellfire open to him. And if he has just one parent, then one door is open for him." After realizing this huge position of parents that the Prophet (ﷺ) was telling the companions about, one of the Companions asked, "Even if the parents were oppressive to them?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Even if they oppress the child, even if they oppress the child, even if they oppress the child.

Ramadhan Victory -- Being Generous

Ramadhan Victory -- Being Generous

Allah Most High loves those who are generous. The Prophet (ﷺ) swears that no person’s wealth decreases because of charity [Tirmidhi] because Allah blesses the remaining wealth and increases it.

Allah Most High says,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. [Quran, Al Baqarah 2:261]

So spend in the way of Allah, solely and sincerely, to seek nothing but His pleasure. Spending with good intention and sincerity, even if it be just a little, becomes enough and helps one receive the gains of the Hereafter.

Ramadhan Victory --- Bringing the Quran into Practice

Ramadhan Victory -- Bringing the Quran into Practice

Bringing the Quran into practice is very important and that’s why the Prophet (ﷺ) said that the most beautiful reward you can imagine yourself, the reward from Allah is better and beyond that.

We are not allowed to envy except for two people: 1) A person who has been given the entire Quran by Allah, who recites it during the night (during prayers) and puts it into practice during the day, 2) A person who was given wealth and he spent it on good things until nothing is left.

All these are connected to sincerity and bringing the Quran into practice. The Prophet (ﷺ) said about those who don’t bring the Quran into practice, don’t be shocked that majority of hypocrites in my ummah are the Quran reciters.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Seek refuge in Allah from the pit of sorrow.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the pit of sorrow?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “It is a valley in Hell from which Hell itself seeks refuge one hundred times a day.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, who will enter it?” The Prophe (ﷺ) said, “The reciters who only acted to be seen.” [Tirmidhi]

There will be people being punished in Hell and their lips cut off with scissors of Hell. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Jibril about them and Jibril said that, “They are those who speak about religion amongst your community and those who read the Quran but don’t put it into practice. [in Musnad Ahmad]

Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason? [Quran, Al Baqarah 2:44]

The Month of Ramadhan is Not Only For Fasting But For Praying

The month of Ramadhan is not only for fasting but for praying.

Some people don't pray taraweeh or qiyam at night, or they only want to pray a little because they are busy at work during the day. The Prophet’s (ﷺ) days were far busier than any of our days will ever be and yet he prayed at night to such an extent that his feet became swollen. Allah is telling you that because you can’t pray that much during the day, because you are too busy, then pray at night.

So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. (7)And to your Lord direct [your] longing. (8) [Quran, Ash-Sharh 94:7-8]

Ramadhan Victory -- Be Humble

Ramadhan Victory -- Be Humble

And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk
through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like self-deluded and boastful people. [Quran, Luqman 31:18]

When Allah asked the devil  to prostrate to Adam, he said “I am better than him. You created him from dirt and you created me from fire.” When Adam was corrected by the Divine, he turned repentant and humbled. It is that humility that Allah honors Adam. It was said that even the word Adam has the meaning of humble sand of earth. It is the humble sand of earth that you should see yourself for what you, a servant of Allah. So you don't have an exulted sense of self but rather you see your need for Allah and you act with humility. It is in our humility that we will find all our honor and success This humility gives us the keys to uphold good character in dealing with those around us. We don't see ourselves as better than anyone else because we and they are all Allah's creation and Allah's servants, And that is the way of Allah's beloved Messenger (ﷺ)

Let us let reflect on our reality and acting with true humility before the greatness of Allah.

Ramadhan Victory -- Grateful For Your Blessings

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' [Qur'an, Ibrahim 14:7]

Whoever is grateful for their blessings have guaranteed themselves an increase, and whoever fails to be grateful for their blessings is liable to losing their blessings.

Being grateful is that you recognize that every blessings you have is from Allah and then you use that blessing in the manner pleasing to Allah. The least gratitude is to not disobey Allah with them. He has blessed you with a tongue, don’t use it to gossip, slander, lie or backbite. He has blessed you with your eyes, the least you can do is to not disobey Allah with them.

Direct every blessings towards that which is pleasing to Allah. If you are of those who are truly grateful, which are few, then you are victorious.

True gratitude is  seeing everything, pleasing things and displeasing things, as blessings from Allah. They are all opportunities to seek the pleasure of Allah. That is the state of Allah’s beloved Messenger (ﷺ) who asked “should I not be a truly grateful servant.”

May Allah make us of those who live victorious on the footsteps of the Prophet (ﷺ). Aameen.

Read the Quran

Allah Most High says,
“...and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.”  [Quran, Al Muzzammil 73:4]

Before you can read the Quran properly, it is necessary to learn how to read and learn from a qualified teacher, someone who will teach you the rules of tajweed.

There are many many ways to read the Quran. There are 950 ways to read the Quran in the ten Qiraat (Nafi’, Ibn Katheer, Abu ‘Amr, Ibn ‘Aamir, ‘Aasim, Hamzah, Kisa’i, Aby Ja’far, Ya’qub, Khalaf ‘As’hir).

The fact that Allah allows these differences is a sign that Allah wants the reading of the Quran easy for you. What teachers normally teach the beginners is one way. The most common is riwayah Hafs of Qir’at ’Aasim from Shatibiyyah. So this knowledge is quite detail and vast. But remember reading a different way of the Quran does not mean it is a different Quran.

What Is An Imam?

This Ummah has centers: the masjid and the Imam. The masjid is the place of worship. The Imam is the anchor and the center of Islamic knowledge and Islamic morality of the community. The Imam does more than lead prayers and give khutbahs. The community revolves around the Imam. Community spirit begins with the Imam. If the Imam reaches out to the community and the community reaches back, a relationship develops and we start to see progress in the community greater than what we see today.

However, when leaders try to run the Imam and the masjid, then the community suffers and the masjid is abandoned.

May Allah return this Ummah to the Imams. Aameen.

Seek Scholars For Your Religious Knowledge, Not Preachers

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The scholars are the heirs of the Prophets, for the Prophets did not leave behind a Dinar or Dirham, rather they left behind knowledge, so whoever takes it has taken a great share." [Tirmidhi]

A religious scholar (ulama’) is someone who has undergone years of religious study with qualified teachers, whose knowledge goes back to the Prophet (ﷺ). Don’t be mistaken into thinking that preachers are scholars. Just because they are popular and draw many followers or subscribers or have high ratings, this is not a criteria to be a scholar. Some preachers even warned you that they are not scholars and yet people take religious knowledge from preachers and pass it around until ordinary people start thinking they know more than the scholars.

The Ummah is in chaos because religious ignorance is widespread. Know that most  great scholars of our time are not in the public view (or social media) out of their humility and dedication to teaching and learning. You have to seek them out to learn from them.

May Allah preserve our scholars and enable us to learn from them. Aameen.

Ramadhan Victory -- Patience In Trials

Allah Most High says,

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.  [Quran, Al Baqarah 2:153]

The two great sources of strength and victory are prayer and patience.

Patience is to see that the test as being from Allah; that the test is an opportunity to seek Allah’s pleasure; to determine what course of action and response that is pleasing to Allah and to hold firm to the response without any objections whatsoever. If you do this during difficulties, then the Divine promise is that truly Allah is with the unwavering patient ones. Patience is strength. You may not see it in the midst of your trials but if you are steadfast, you will feel the closeness of Allah.

May we find victory in ourselves, our families and our communities. Aameen.

Are You Dedicated To Your Religion?

This is a time in which people want everything to come to them, even Islamic knowledge. The thing is that the more you travel for knowledge the more barakah you will have in your knowledge.

Today the shaykhs come to you to teach but people don’t want to come to learn. If the shaykh were to say “I will stop coming,” then 90% of the people would no longer come. Classes of Quran will no longer take place. Many people would not have finished the Quran, hadith or anything if the shaykh wouldn’t travel to them because the barakah is not there.

Even Prophet Musa, Allah grant him peace, traveled a long period for knowledge [Surah Al-Kahf ayat 60-66]

Let’s read Surah Kahf today and benefit from the stories narrated.

Learn, Read, Practice Quran

We recited the Quran with our voices but that which we are reciting are Allah’s Words. In reality you can never give the Quran enough time. This why our great scholars before they died there is always one thing that they regret, which is they didn’t give the Quran enough time in their life. Today, the Quran is not well read, meaning the rules of tajweed are not being respected. The most unfortunate is that the Quran is not being practiced.

Don't be people who the Messenger(ﷺ) complained about.

Ramadhan Victory -- Purify Intentions

The first key to victory in our own selves is purifying our intentions. Commit to sincerely seeking Allah in every aspect of our lives. Make our purpose of living and dying seeking Allah. If we do that we are victorious regardless of the outward outcomes.

Most Hypocrites Are Quran Reciters

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, most of the hypocrites in my nation are among its reciters.”
[Musnad Ahmad]

The Hadīth contains criticism of the reciters of the Quran who outwardly shows by his actions that he wants the reward of the Hereafter, while he hides the fact that he wants to be praised by people and gain worldly benefit. Therefore, the reciter and the hypocrite are similar in that their internal state contradicts their external state.

The Purpose & Spirit of Ramadhan

The Purpose & Spirit of Ramadhan

Allah Almighty says,

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous - [Quran, Al Baqarah 2:183]

May this verse remind us of the wisdom and blessings of fasting, encouraging us to embrace the opportunity to grow spiritually and strengthen our relationship with our Creator.

Fear Allah -- Don't Be A Test For People

If people don’t like you in one place, you can go to another place. Allah’s earth is vast. But if Allah does not like you, where can you go?

Allah Almighty says,

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent. [Quran, Al Baqarah 2:284]

Say, "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account." [Quran, Az-Zumar 39:10]

Victory from Allah is not only a promise but a certainty for those who believe. But this victory comes with conditions that require us to act-- to stand firm in our faith and contributions towards positive change.

Ramadhan Mubarak 1445H/2024

Ramadhan Mubarak 1445H/2024

The Companion Abdullah ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘The religion of Islam is based upon five (pillars): testifying that there is no deity except Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; establishing the prayer; giving zakat; making pilgrimage; and fasting (the month) of Ramadan.’” [Bukhari & Muslim]

Fasting in Ramadhan is an act that cleanses one’s mind, body, and soul from the spiritual and physical impurities of this world, that brings the hearts of Muslims together as they endeavor to practice the virtue of self-discipline in unison, and that satiates the hungry soul for its eagerness to please the Lord of the Worlds.

Set Lofty Goals For Ramadhan

Set Lofty Goals For Ramadhan

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.”
[Quran, Al Baqarah 2:185]

Ramadhan is our opportunity to set lofty goals that bring us closer to Allah. For those of you aspiring to memorize the Quran, this Ramadhan is a perfect time to start or deepen your journey with the Book of Allah. It's a time when the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would intensify their engagement with the Quran, through recitation, reflection, and memorization.

Be Good People

Abdallah b. ‘Umar told of God’s messenger taking him by the shoulders and saying, ‘‘Be in the world as though you were a stranger or one who is passing through.” Ibn ‘Umar used to say, “In the evening do not expect to see the morning and in the morning do not expect to see the evening, but take something when in health to serve you in time of illness and something in your life to serve you in your death.” Bukhari transmitted it.

Adorn yourself with the traits of someone the Prophet (ﷺ) loves, Muadh ibn Jabal

Adorn yourself with the traits of someone the Prophet (ﷺ) loves, Muadh ibn Jabal

The Prophet (ﷺ) held the hand of Muadh and said, “I really love you...” The scholars said the reason why the Prophet loves Muadh because of his knowledge of the religion (fiqh) and his Quran.

The People of the Quran are Allah’s family (figurative) and the chosen ones among the servants of Allah. When the Prophet (ﷺ) loves you, you are loved by Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ) says, “I swear by Allah, Allah does not throw those He loves into hell.” We  are desperately in need of the love of Allah. If you truly love Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), do not fall short in saying this after each prayer.

Allāhumma ‘a`innī `alā dhikrika, wa shukrika, wa ḥusni `ibādatik.

O Allah, help me to remember You, to give You thanks, and to perform Your worship in the best manner.
