Gratitude and Obedience to Parents is Obligatory

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ فِى عَامَيْنِ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَيْكَ إِلَىَّ ٱلْمَصِيرُ ‎﴿١٤﴾‏وَإِن جَٰهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تُشْرِكَ بِى مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا وَٱتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ مَنْ أَنَابَ إِلَىَّ ثُمَّ إِلَىَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ ‎﴿١٥﴾‏

We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. (14) But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. (15)

Manage Your Time

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Don’t say you don’t have time to read a juz (20 pages) of the Quran everyday. Don’t say you don’t have time to learn and understand it. Where are your minutes going? Know that the more time you spend for Allah, the more time Allah will give you. If you spend one hour for the sake of Allah, Allah will give you at least 10 in return. So, you don’t have moments you don’t count. Every moment can be turned into eternal bliss or eternal doom.

If you don’t manage your time, you are losing your life capital.

وَٱلْعَصْرِ ‎﴿١﴾‏إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَفِى خُسْرٍ ‎﴿٢﴾‏إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ ‎﴿٣﴾‏

 By time, (1)Indeed, mankind is in loss, (2)Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience. (3) [Quran, Al Asr 103]

 قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ، الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ ‏"‏‏
 

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "There are two blessings which are wasted by a lot of people: health and free time." [Bukhari]

The Obvious Losers

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

 وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَعْبُدُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ حَرْفٍ فَإِنْ أَصَابَهُۥ خَيْرٌ ٱطْمَأَنَّ بِهِۦ وَإِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ فِتْنَةٌ ٱنقَلَبَ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِۦ خَسِرَ ٱلدُّ
نْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْخُسْرَانُ ٱلْمُبِينُ ‎﴿١١﴾‏

And of the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.

Let's Read Surah Kahf Today (Friday) -- Restoring Ummah Starts With You

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

The story of the cave in Surah Al-Kahf shows how a few youths came together and change their lives amidst religious persecution. Allah created Friday for us to come together every single week to the masjid without any advertisement or announcement. This is our opportunity to be more united than we were the week before. 

So don’t miss Friday prayer and don’t rush out after prayer. Go out of your comfort zone and get to know people in the congregation other than your own circle, your ethnicity or age group. Make new friends and new connections. When this starts happening in masjids around the world, a natural progression towards unity starts happening. But you have to start in your masjid. Until then don’t talk about how this or that nation is divided when we ourselves are doing nothing towards unity.

The Greatest Wisdom (Hikmah)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

Being grateful to the blessings of Allah Ta'ala is the greatest wisdom (hikmah)

 وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا لُقْمَٰنَ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِلَّهِ

And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." [Quran, Luqman 31:12]

Luqman (peace be upon him)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا لُقْمَٰنَ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِلَّهِ وَمَن يَشْكُرْ فَإِنَّمَا يَشْكُرُ لِنَفْسِهِۦ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌ

And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.

[Quran, Luqman 31:12]

On a certain day, while Luqman was addressing a big gathering

of people sharing his wisdom with them, there came a person and asked him point blank: 'Are you not the same person who used to graze goats with me in such and such forest?'

Luqman, said: 'Yes, I am the same person." The man asked, 'How then, could you achieve this status that such multitudes of people hold you in reverence and come to hear your words from far and wide?' Luqman said: 'The reason lies in two things I do: (1) Always telling the truth and (2) avoiding the useless things.

It appears in another report that he said: 'I tell you about a few things that have given me this station in life. If you were to take to these, you too will have the same rank and status. These are as follow: (1) Lower your gaze and hold your tongue. (2) Stay content with lawful sustenance. (3) Guard your private parts. (4) Tell the truth and uphold it. (5) Fulfill the pledge. (6) Honor the guest. (7)\Protect the neighbor. (8) Observe silence against wasteful speech and leave off all useless indulgences.' (Ibn Kathir]

Seeking knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “Seeking knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim.” 

[Tabarani, Bayhaqi]

As the students learn and implements their knowledge, Allah Most High opens doors of deeper knowledge for them. This knowledge is referred to as gifted knowledge (wahbi). To this effect, the following verse alludes:

Allah Most High says, “Be mindful of Allah, for Allah will teach you. And Allah has ’perfect’ knowledge of all things.”

Du'a For Increase In Knowledge

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

There is only one thing that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was commanded to ask for an increase in the Qur’an. That thing is knowledge.

Allah Most High says, 

وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًا

“Say, (O Prophet)! My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.” 

[Qur’an, Ta-Ha 20:114]

The Beginning of the Path to Knowledge – Qualified Sources of Knowledge

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

The most essential factor in one’s seeking knowledge is connecting oneself to an authentic chain of transmission going back to the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) called Isnad.

 ‘Abdullah bin Mubarak (Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Isnad is from the religion. If it was not for the isnad, whoever wished could say want they want (about the religion).” [Muslim]

Seek out a qualified scholar who learned from qualified scholars and them from qualified scholars back to the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace).

Seek Knowledge, Make it Your Lifetime Goal

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

Due to the immense importance of knowledge and the effort that is needed in its acquisition – its virtues are likewise immense.

Allah Most High declares the uniqueness of the rank of the people of knowledge over others throughout the Qur’an. He says, “Say, O Prophet, “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” None will be mindful ˹of this˺ except people of reason…” [Qur’an, Az-Zumar 39:9]

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever travels a path, seeking therein knowledge, Allah facilitates for them a path to Paradise. Indeed the Angels lay down their wings out of contentment for the seeker of knowledge. Indeed all the inhabitants of the Heavens and the Earth seek forgiveness for the scholar, even the fish in the sea. The merit of the scholar over the mere worshipper is that of the moon over the rest of the stars. Indeed the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. The Prophets did not leave us inheritance gold nor silver. They only left behind knowledge, so whoever takes of it, has taken a plentiful share.” [Tirmidhi]

Who do you ally with?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

Who do you ally with?

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “…Indeed the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. The Prophets did not leave us inheritance gold nor silver. They only left behind knowledge, so whoever takes of it, has taken a plentiful share.” [Tirmidhi]

The best group you want to ally with are the Scholars because they are the bearers of knowledge that will guide you. If you find them you follow and support them. They bear the marks of prophets in their conduct, words, actions, states and circumstances. The sacred knowledge that guides is not about reading books or memorizing pages. It is about bearing an inheritance of the prophets. 

Imam Malik said, knowledge is not to narrate lots of information and figures but knowledge is light that Allah puts in the heart through which a person knows how to represent the guidance of prophets in their age. 

Why are we are looking for the inheritors of prophets? Because we want that light. And if you are with the prophets, the prophets are with you because they all prayed for this group that stands before Allah across time and place.

"It will be said to the companion of the Qur'an, when he enters Paradise: 'Recite and rise one degree for every Verse,' until he recites the last thing that he knows." [Ibn Maajah]

Let's Read Surah Kahf Today (Friday)

Surah Al-Kahf is a Surah we should  recite every Friday. That is a Prophetic way of letting us know that there are lessons in the Surah that are going to be relevant in our everyday life. We need to review them especially on the day of Friday. The lessons in the stories are guidance that is going to protect us from all kinds of problems.  

 رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا

[Quran, Al Kahf 18:10]

If You Don't Know, Ask People Of Knowledge

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًا نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ فَسْـَٔلُوٓا۟ أَهْلَ ٱلذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ‎﴿٤٣﴾‏

And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message if you do not know. (43)

Do Good To People

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

واعلم أنك متى أسأت عشرة الناس صاروا لك أعداء ولو كان أمهات وأباء ومتى أحسنت عشرة الناس من أقوام ليسوا لك أقرباء صاروا لك أقرباء

And know that when you do wrong to people, they will become your enemies, even if they are mothers and fathers. And when you do good to people who were not relatives, they will become your relatives.

Reward for Ihsaan (Excellence)

هَلْ جَزَآءُ ٱلْإِحْسَٰنِ إِلَّا ٱلْإِحْسَٰنُ ‎﴿٦٠﴾

Is the reward for ihsaaan [anything] but ihsaan? [Quran, Ar-Rahman 55:60]

Ihsaan is "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you." [Bukhari]

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عِوَجَا ‎﴿١﴾‏ قَيِّمًا لِّيُنذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا مِّن لَّدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا ‎﴿٢﴾‏ مَّٰكِثِينَ فِيهِ أَبَدًا ‎﴿٣﴾‏ وَيُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدًا ‎﴿٤﴾‏ 

 [All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance. (1) [He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward (2) In which they will remain forever (3) And to warn those who say, "Allah has taken a son." (4)

Realize the Greatness of Allah and of His Remembrance

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

Allah says,

ٱتْلُ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱلْمُنكَرِ وَلَذِكْرُ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ ‎﴿٤٥﴾‏

Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do. [Qur'an, Al-Ankabut 29:45]

When you say “Allahu Akbar” you must realize in your heart that Allah is greater than everything else that you hold in high esteem. Then everything in creation will dwindle into insignificance and only Allah will remain in your heart. Realize that Allah is greater than yourself and all the things that your heart is attached to.

Indifference With The Worldly Life (Zuhd)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ‎﴿٧﴾

Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.

إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا ‎﴿١٠﴾‏

[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

وَأَوْحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلنَّحْلِ أَنِ ٱتَّخِذِى مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا وَمِنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ ‎﴿٦٨﴾‏ثُمَّ كُلِى مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ فَٱسْلُكِى سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًا يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَٰنُهُۥ شِفَآءٌ لِّلنَّاسِ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ‎﴿٦٩﴾

And your Lord inspired to the bee, "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and among the trees and [in] that which they construct. (68)Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought. (69) [Quran, An-Nahl 16:68-69]

Quran is healing for the believers

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدْ جَآءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَآءٌ لِّمَا فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ‎﴿٥٧﴾

O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ هُدًى وَشِفَآءٌ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرٌ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمًى أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يُنَادَوْنَ مِن مَّكَانِۭ بَعِيدٍ ‎﴿٤٤﴾

Say (O Muhammad), "It (the Quran) is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place. [Quran, Fussilat 41:44]

Alif, Lam, Meem. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 

Quran is healing for the believers

وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَا يَزِيدُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا خَسَارًا 

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.

[Quran, Al-Isra’ 17:82]
