No Time to Relax, Rush to Good Deeds

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

When you look at a workplace, each head of office has his/her own support staff or secretary. There is a private secretary and a number of support staff to a Vice President of a company, a secretary and law clerk to a judge, a private secretary, and various executive support staff to the President of United States. The President of United States is not expected to set his own media conference, book his own plane tickets, or go to the copying center and make copies of documents because, like the VP and the judge, he has more important things to do.

Allah created and subjected the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the animals, the ships to sail, the rivers, the plants and everything on earth for our service. They tireless serving as Allah commanded and they will not stop working unless Allah commands them. At that point this world will come to an end. For Allah to subject other creations in the universe to humans, this should lead us to believe that we really have important things to do. After all, humans were made the vicegerent/khalifah on earth.

And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority (vicegerant/khalifah)."...
[Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:30]

And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] that He may try you through what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful. (165)
[Qur'an, An-'Am 6:165]

But what happens to us? Similar to a lousy king, who has everything taken care for him and his royal family, live a life of luxury so much so that the princes don't have to lift a finger and become spoiled rotten and end up destroying the empire. The early generations of Muslims that were given the Message, they took it very seriously and they understood that Allah has put the world to our service so we can serve Allah. They came out victorious against all odds. The latter generations came and said, 'We have the world at our service so we have time to relax'. And so Muslims become who we are and in the state we are now.

All the facilities, technology, utilities and all the conveniences we enjoy in life are not supposed to put us in a mode of relaxation but they are supposed to put us in a state of urgency. We have to realize that Allah has subdued the sun, the moon, etc for our service to serve Him, and serve Him alone.

It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers. (32) And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for you the night and the day. (33)
And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful. (34)
[Qur'an, Ibrahim 14:32-34]

As vicegerents of Allah, we are to maintain spiritual and temporal order under His commandments, to teach others how to abide by His laws, and sometimes even to exercise temporal power and spiritual authority under His guidance (the Qur'an and Sunnah). Are we doing all these to the best of our ability? We should have this feeling of urgency to do these works so to gain His pleasure and bring us closer to Him.

Rush to good deeds and always, always, be grateful for all the countless blessings He has bestowed upon us and say 'Alhamdulillah' for keeping us alive so we can have this moment to serve Him and His Deen.

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful. (200)
[Qur'an AleImaran 3:200]

May Allah make us of those who are grateful to Him and grant us righteous deeds and sincerity. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam.

Allah alone give success.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam

Going To Paradise With Your Family

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

We all know that patience is tremendously important for our well-being. We can't have peace and success if we are not patient. And it takes a lot to be patient. Our patience is being tested at every moment.

But how well will be those who have patience.

Those who fulfill the covenant of Allah and do not break the contract, (20) And those who join that which Allah has ordered to be joined and fear their Lord and are afraid of the evil of [their] account, (21) And those who are patient, seeking the countenance of their Lord, and establish prayer and spend from what We have provided for them secretly and publicly and prevent evil with good - those will have the good consequence of [this] home - (22) Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their ancestors, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying], (23) "Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home." (24)
[Qur'an, Ar-Ra'd 13:20-25]

Who wouldn't dream of Paradise with his/her family? Already we work so hard, spend everything -- time, money, effort -- for our families so they can have fun and the best in this life. But are we putting even a small fraction of that so they can have fun and the best in the next life? Our children have become people of ingratitude and they grow as adults that way too. It's not uncommon to see children being rude to their parents, even in public, children mistreating their parents, and many more are estranged from their parents. You don't have to look far -- if it is not in your own family, it is in your friend's family or your neighbor's family or your community. Why so?

The answer is simple. When you violate the teachings of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam), preferring this worldly life over the Hereafter, you are not just harming yourself, you are also harming others, the first people being your own children. When you separate that which Allah has commanded to be joined, then there is always bad consequences.

But those who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined and spread corruption on earth - for them is the curse, and they will have the worst home. (25)
[Qur'an, Ar-Ra'd 13:25]

Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment.
[Qur'an, Ar-Ra'd 13:26]

Start bringing the Sunnah to your homes and strive to develop patience within yourselves in all of its aspects (patience in worshiping Allah and adhering to His commands, patience in avoiding sins and acts of disobedience, patience with the decree of Allah and calamities). Keep together our loyalty to the Book of Allah and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam); keep together our concern for this life and the next; keep together our belief in this life and the next; keep together our knowledge and actions; and keep our family relationships together, don't sever them.

May Allah enable us to follow the footsteps of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) and join us and our families with him in the highest Paradise. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam

Patience! Patience! Patience!

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Patience (sabr) is a comprehensive virtue in Islam that encompasses perseverance, endurance, forbearance, diligence, and restraint. It is a characteristic of enlightenment that develops in the heart of a Muslim.

Patience can be divided into three components:

1. Patience in worshiping Allah and adhering to His commands. It is to have perseverance in fulfilling the obligations of Islam such as prayer, giving charity, and fasting.

Allah Almighty says,

O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Verily, Allah is with the patient.
[Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:153]

Patience applies to the rights of people just as it applies to the rights of Allah, for we should be patient with people when they abuse us and sin against us.

Allah Almighty says,

Be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.
[Qur'an, Al-Muzzammil 73:10]

And Allah Almighty says,

The messengers said: We will surely be patient against whatever harm you should cause us, and upon Allah let rely those who would rely.
[Qur'an, Ibrahim 14:12]

For this reason, Allah has praised the believers who restrain their anger and forgive others.

Allah Almighty says,

They are those who spend in charity during ease and hardship and who restrain their anger and pardon the people, for Allah loves the doers of good.
[Qur'an, AleImran 3:134]

Likewise, we should not repay an evil deed with another evil deed, but rather repel evil with good.

Allah Almighty says,

Not equal are the good deed and the bad deed. Repel evil by that which is better, and then the one who is hostile to you will become as a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient and none is granted it except one having a great fortune.
[Qur'an, Fussilat 41:34-35]

And Allah Almighty says,

They are those who are patient, seeking the countenance of their Lord, and establish prayer and spend from what We have provided for them, secretly and publicly, and repel evil with good, for those will have the good end.
[Qur'an, Ar-Ra’d 13:22]

This type of patience is an essential pillar of enjoining good and forbidding evil, such that one who is impatient cannot fulfill this duty.

2. Patience in avoiding sins and acts of disobedience. It is to be diligent in avoiding sins and acts of disobedience.

Allah Almighty says,

So be patient as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. It will be on the Day they see that which they are promised as though they had not remained in the world but an hour of a day. This is a notification, and will any be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient?
[Qur'an, Al-Ahqaf 46:35]

For example, Allah will provide shade on the Day of Judgment to a man who was enticed by a woman to commit adultery but he remained patient.

Abu Hurayra reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

(Allah will provide shade to) a man to whom a beautiful woman of high status seduces but he rejects her by saying I fear Allah.
[Bukhari]

3. Patience with the decree of Allah and calamities. It is to be content with the decree of Allah and at the time of calamity.

Allah Almighty says,

Luqman said: O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Verily, that is among the matters requiring determination.
[Qur'an, Luqman 31:17]

In fact, true patience is to be calm and composed during the first strike of a calamity.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said:

Be mindful of Allah and be patient.

She said, “Go away from me, for you have not been afflicted by a calamity like mine!” And she did not recognize him. Then, she was told that it was the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam), so she went to the house of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) and she did not find any bodyguards there. She said to him, “I did not recognize you.” The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said:

Verily, patience is at the first strike. [Bukhari]

Indeed, this high level of patience can only be achieved upon the realization that nothing occurring to a true believer is bad for him, because a calamity is an opportunity to be patient and thereby receive reward from Allah.

Suhaib reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said:

Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good for him in every matter and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he is happy, then he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him, and if he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus there is good for him.
[Muslim]

The perfection of these three aspects together is called beautiful patience. This was the characteristic of the Prophets of Allah.

Allah Almighty says,

So be patient with beautiful patience.
[Qur'an, Al-Ma’arij 70:5]

If we can achieve such beautiful patience, only then will Allah bestow upon us true leadership in the religion.

Allah Almighty says:

And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs. (24) I
[Qur'an, As-Sajda 32:24]

May Allah grant us beautiful patience. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam.

And Allah knows best.

Make Your Prostrations More Meaningful: Let's Reflect on and Memorize the Verses of Prostration/Tilaawah

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassalaam) said,
When, the son of Adam recites the Ayat of Sajdah (prostration) and then falls down in prostration, the Satan goes into seclusion and weeps and says: Alas,
and in the narration of Abu Kuraib the words are:
Woe unto me, the son of Adam was commanded to prostrate, and he prostrated and Paradise was entitled to him and I was commanded to prostrate, but I refused and am doomed to Hell.
[Muslim]

There are fifteen places in the Qur’an where we should perform sajdat al-tilaawah (prostration of recitation) when reciting them or hearing them. Let's reflect on the meanings of these verses and memorize them this Ramadhan.

The merits of prostration can fill pages, and there are also a number of narrations where the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) told people to supplicate in their prostrations.

Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said,
There is no slave [of Allah] who performs a single prostration to Allah except that Allah raises him a degree due to it and lifts from him a mistake.
[Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ahmad]

Abu Huraryah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said,
The closest a slave is to his Lord is while he is in a state of prostration, so increase you supplications [therein].
[Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasa`i, Ahmad]

It should be our desire to draw nearer and closer to Almighty Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. By drawing closer and near to Allah we gain His help in every aspect of our lives in this world and to be merciful to us so that we may gain mercy in the hereafter in order to enter Jannah in the next world.

When we call upon Allah, He would answer our calls and when we ask of Him for anything He would give it to us and when we draw nearer to Him then our sincerity and intentions will enable us to become closer to Him.

How To Perform Prostration of Recitation (Sujood Al-Tilaawah) During Prayer

Once you recite a verse of prostration during the prayer, you should say the takbir (say “Allahu Akbar”) and prostrate immediately, then say Subhaana Rabbiy al-A’laa (Glory be to my Lord Most High) during prostration, and then say the takbir and rise back up to the standing (qiyam) position.

Madhhab Hanafi

Madhhab Shafi'i

Among the du’a’s recommended during prostration:

Allaahumma laka sajadtu wa bika aamantu wa laka aslamtu, sajada wajhi lilladhi khalaqahu wa sawwarahu wa shaqqa sam’ahu wa basarahu bi hawlihi wa quwwatihi, tabaarak Allaahu ahsan al-khaaliqeen

(O Allah, unto You I have prostrated and in You I have believed, and unto You I have submitted. My face has prostrated before Him Who created it and fashioned it, and brought forth its faculties of hearing and seeing by His Might and Power. Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators). [Narrated by Muslim]

Allaahumma aktub li biha ‘indaka ajran wa’mhu ‘anni biha wizran waj’alha li ‘indaka dukhran wa taqabbalha minni kama taqabbaltaha min ‘abdika Dawood

(O Allah, record for me a reward for this (prostration), and remove from me a sin. Save it for me and accept it from me just as You accepted it from Your slave Dawood).” [Narrated by at-Tirmidhi]

It is best to supplicate with the words conveyed in the Qur’an and the sunna of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam). It would also be permitted to recite a supplication not found in the Qur’an or Sunna, as long as it is not something normally possible to ask for from human beings, such as “Oh Allah, give me a car.” [Ibn `Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

The 15 VERSES OF PROSTRATION/TILAAWAH

Juz 9 Surah Al-'Araf 7:206

Indeed, those who are near your Lord are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate. (206)

And to Allah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons. (15)

And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant. (49) They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded. (50)

And they fall upon their faces weeping, and the Qur'an increases them in humble submission. (109)

Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping. (58)

Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates - for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills. (18)

Juz 17 Surah Hajj 22:77 (Madhhab Shafi'i and Hanbali)

O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good - that you may succeed. (77)

Wahai orang-orang yang beriman, ruku'lah kamu, sujudlah kamu, sembahlah Tuhanmu dan perbuatlah kebajikan, supaya kamu mendapat kemenangan.

Juz 19 Surah Al-Furqan 25:60

And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion. (60)

[And] so they do not prostrate to Allah, who brings forth what is hidden within the heavens and the earth and knows what you conceal and what you declare - (25) Allah - there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Great Throne." (26)

Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant. (15)

Juz 23 Surah Sad 38:24 (Madhhab Hanafi)

[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah]. (24)

But if they are arrogant - then those who are near your Lord exalt Him by night and by day, and they do not become weary. (38)

Juz 27 Surah Najm 53:62 (Madhhab Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali)

So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]. (62)

Maka bersujudlah kepada Allah dan sembahlah (Dia).

Juz 30 Al-Inshiqaq 84:21 (Madhhab Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali)

And when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allah]? (21)

Juz 30 Al-'Alaq 96:19 (Madhhab Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali)

No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. (19)

Daripada Abu Hurayrah katanya, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) bersabda: “Apabila anak Adam membaca ayat Sajadah, lalu ia sujud; maka syaitan jatuh sambil menangis. Katanya, “Celaka aku! Anak Adam disuruh sujud, maka dia sujud, lalu mendapat syurga. Aku disuruh sujud, tetapi aku menolak, maka untukku neraka.” [Bukhari dan Muslim]

May Allah grant us tawfiq and increase us in iman. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam.

Let's Read Surah Kahf Today (Friday) -- Beauty

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

For animal species to survive on this planet, they need certain essentials -- food, air, water, space, etc. Human beings have an additional need that other species don't need, that is beauty.

If the food look ugly to you, you don't like it, but if the same food is decorated on a plate, you can't wait to eat it. We want things around us beautified, unlike every other species. If you put a piece of chicken on the floor in front of a cat, it eats it. You put hay in front of a horse, it eats it. You throw a banana to a monkey, it catches it and eats it. They don't need the food presented in a certain way like we do: decoration, garnishing, condiments and table setting -- color scheme, floral arrangements or flowers to complement the color scheme, napkins (serviettes) in the same color scheme, table mats that match or complement the color scheme, silverware, tablecloth, certain patterns on the plates, etc.

We want beauty, not just in one aspect of existence, but we want beauty in everything -- we want a beautiful face, a beautiful spouse, beautiful children, beautiful houses, beautiful cars, beautiful ambiance, beautiful places to visit, the list is endless.

The things that people are attracted to are beautiful only on this earth. If somebody wants to limit himself to it, he can, but those things won't go farther than this world.

No doubt, We made whatever on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed. (7)
[Qur'an, Al-Kahf 18:7]

Allah didn't make this world beautiful for no purpose. Allah made this world outwardly beautiful, so He can see who among us will do more beautiful things in terms of our actions -- i.e where we will put our priority in life. Your never quenching thirst for beauty should make you internalize that there is something perfect and timeless, and unless you seek that you will never find satisfaction. We have something higher to work for in this life.

May Allah protect us from heedlessness and enable us to do beautiful things according to His sight. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
