May God Have Mercy...

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

We don't have 20 years to plan for our lives and thinking "I will start praying or obeying Allah or following the Sunnah when I am 40."

Each breath you take is a breath closer to death and perhaps your next breath is your last breath. Therefore, with every given breath we must be prepared for the last breath that we will take in this temporal life.
A man dies in accordance with what he had lived in, and is resurrected in accordance with what he had died in.
[Jami’us Saghir]

Death is the only certain thing in this life but most people don't give much consideration. Death will come unannounced, whether you are young or old, healthy or sick, rich or poor.

Allah says,

Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction...
[Qur'an An-Nisa 4:78]

Think, in what state would you like to be when you breathe your last. Is it in a state of disobedience like dancing and clapping with loud and annoying music, the state of what some of my neighbors are in for the last many hours (it is now bedtime for many), or in a state of peace and contentment?

Whatever the soul is preoccupied with in this world, it will also be preoccupied with the same thing at the time of death. Of course there are exceptions. Even though we can be spending our entire life worshipping and doing good deeds, we should never take for granted that we will attain the mercy of Allah.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
Allah will not show mercy to a person who does not show mercy to other people.
[Bukhari]
Allah is only merciful with those who show mercy to others.
[Bukhari]
Mercy is only removed from the one who is destined for wretchedness.
[Bukhari]
Be merciful to those in the earth, so the One above the heavens will be merciful to you.
[At-Tabarani and Al-Hakim with a Sahih chain]

May Allah have mercy on us. Ameen. Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Our Trash

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Trash is not a fun subject but it is a serious issue. Most people don't think about trash because some men come and take it all away, but if you have to live with your garbage for a month, you will realize how much garbage we humans produce that we are actually endangering our environment and ultimately ourselves.

The earth is not getting any bigger. So where do you suppose all the trash go? Some people already are living on reclaimed garbage dump or next to garbage locations, and are drowned by flies and stinking odor. You might not have this problem but it will sooner or later be in your backyard, front yard and side yard.

You have to seriously evaluate this. A household of 4 people should not average more than 1/2 regular size grocery bag of garbage per day. If you have more than this, you probably are wasting and doing something wrong.

...And eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance).
[Qur'an A‘raf 7:31]

...And waste not by extravagance. Verily, He likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance).
[Qur'an An‘aam 6:141]

When I look at the trash out there, disposables, plastic and paper products comprise much of the trash.

Use cloth napkins or kitchen towels instead of paper towels and tissue paper. Where were the days when you see men with a handkerchief in their pockets? You don't see that anymore. Use washables (like cups, plates) instead of disposables, even when you entertain a lot of guests. It will take more time to clean but it is worth it. You are helping saving the environment. Too much trash is a bigger problem than too much gray water.

Another type of trash is leftover food. This is sad when we remember those people who are starving to death. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Next time you throw away leftovers, make sure you fast the next day so you will be more conscious about not cooking too much or storing too much food items that they went bad and end up in the garbage dumps.

Prepare food in sensible quantities that your family can finish at a single sitting -- leftovers will quickly become a liability. Cook less than normal. Remember it doesn't take much to fill up a third of the stomach. We should accustom ourselves to not eat to our fill or beyond our fill because this is not Sunnah and not healthy. Eating less than a full stomach, not only is it a form of worship because we are following the Sunnah of Allah's Messenger, Allah bless him and grant him peace, we also will find our body more healthy, feel lighter and so easier to do more worship, like waking up at night to pray tahajjud. A believer don't eat based on desires and gluttony.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any son of Adam are some morsels to keep his back straight. But if it must be, then one third for his food, one third for his drink and one third for his breath.
[Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah]
The believer eats with one stomach while the kafir eats with seven stomachs.
[Bukhari and Muslim]

Below are more tips to help you reduce your trash.

1) Think about whether you really need that item before you buy it. Can you make do with something you already have? The more you buy, the more trash you will create, so if you can make the items you already own do double duty, you will create less trash in the long run.

2) Do not buy overpackaged products

Don't buy things packaged in individual serving sizes. Buy one larger bottle instead of four or eight smaller ones.

Buy one larger container instead of many smaller ones. Since you are paying for less packaging and shipping, you may also pay less by buying in bulk.

Ask your butcher to wrap your meat in peach paper only, then attach the price on top to keep the paper folded. Peach paper is a strong, water and oil proof meat wrapping paper normally used to split stages of meat inside a styrofoam tray. It is available in rolls or in sheet.

Buy fresh, unpacked, fruits and vegetables.

Buy grains, pasta and dried fruit in bulk.

Look at whether the package is recyclable in your area before you buy

3) Use your own bags when you go grocery shopping. Both paper and plastic bags do the environment little good.

Bring a canvas bag with you to the store.

Ask that store clerks not bag items that have their own handles (milk, bottled laundry detergent) or already have bags (produce) or packages (cereal). Often, the package an item comes in is just as convenient as putting that package in another bag.

Ask for no bags if you only bought items that you can easily carry or if the items are going straight from cart to car to kitchen.

Pack your purchases yourself. You can pack them your own way and save time and bags.

If you cannot avoid getting a plastic bag from the store re use it as a trash bag for the bathroom, bedroom or kid's room.

4) Go Paperless! Paper constitutes about 30% of average American's garbage.

Don't print things if you can see them on screen.

Receive and process bank statements, pay stubs, bills, and many other documents entirely electronically.

Avoid collecting brochures and flyers. Were you going to read them, anyway?

Use reusable gift bags. You can even make your own out of fabric

5) Stop your junk mail. A few phone calls can work wonders. It will save you time, clutter, and quite possibly money, too.

6) Purchase used products from garage sales, classified ads, or anywhere else they are available. You'll save money and reduce the demand for new products. Buying used is a direct form of recycling.

7) Choose to reuse.

Use fabric napkins instead of paper napkins or paper towels. Find two or three per member of your family (hint: thrift stores and garage sales are a great source). If they don't all match and they're not too dirty, family members can use them for more than one meal.

Pack a waste-free lunch. Use a lunchbox, not a paper bag.

Use reusable food containers instead of plastic bags or prepackaged drinks, both in your lunch box and at home. If you do use plastic zipper bags for food storage, you can wash and reuse them several times. Don't reuse bags that contained meat.

Avoid using paper plates, paper or plastic tablecloths, and plastic, disposable flatware.

Use a washcloth instead of a disposable face wipe.

Use fabric, not paper, towels, in the kitchen and bathroom.

Clean with terry towels instead of paper towels or wipes.

Some cloth diapers have evolved. Use cloth diapers, at least when you are at home. Wash the diapers instead of throwing them away.

8) Use less.
Buy only as much of something as you know you can use before it spoils. This may mean a one-week supply of perishable foods.

Cut dryer sheets, paper towels, tissues, and other things into smaller pieces if you do not need the whole thing.

Empty the trash without replacing the liner, unless the liner is heavily soiled. Separating out especially messy trash, such as vegetable scraps for compost, will keep liners usable for longer. Reuse grocery bags for trash can liners wherever possible.

Use only as much soap and detergent as you really need. Open your washer during the cycle. If the water feels slippery, and (in a top-loader) looks sudsy, try cutting back just a bit on the amount of detergent you use, regardless of what the cup says. See how little shampoo and dish soap you really need, too. Many products are very concentrated and, past a certain point, more soap does not mean cleaner.

Cook at home. Raw ingredients often come with less packaging than prepared, boxed foods.

9) Compost and mulch your garden with what you grow there. It will cut down your yard and vegetable waste tremendously (often around 15% of the waste that households produce and it will improve your soil and your garden without the use of chemical fertilizer. If you can use mostly materials you were producing anyway, such as grass clippings and fallen leaves, you will also save many trips to the nursery or hardware store to buy mulch and soil.

10) Borrow, lend, rent, and share. If you and your neighbor both do your own gardening, do you each need your own lawnmower? Could you rent a tiller (or pickup truck) for the one week in spring when you really need it?

11) Maintain and repair instead of replacing. Don't throw out your vacuum cleaner if it isn't picking up. Check the bag and the belt and make sure the hoses are free of clogs.

12) Buy for durability. Whenever possible, choose a product that you will use for a long time and be able to maintain and repair should it be necessary. It may cost a bit more up front, but it will save waste and money in the long run.
Durability goes for style and fashion, too. It's not always possible to tell before buying something how soon it will be hopelessly out of date, but it is usually possible to buy simple, classic styles that you like and can wear or display in your home for a long time.

13) One useful strategy is to try to reduce the weight, volume, and odor of the trash that you generate. Choose cans over bottles, and reusable containers over both.

14) Separate recyclable items so it is easy for those who collect them, or you can take them to recycle centers yourself.

15) Do not burn things -- the fumes can be toxic.

16) Use waste container with a tight-fitting lid, and secure it so it doesn't topple over and invite flies and rodents.

17) Most importantly of all, don't be a litter bug. Leaving no trash is much easier if you don't let it hit the ground in the first place!

Don't worry if you are alone in this. We are not expected to save the world alone, but we can do something to save our own souls, by showing our gratitude to Allah for the environment He created for us. And that is by doing the best you can, taking every means you can, to protect it and not waste it.

May Allah give us tawfiq (success). Ameen. Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Motherhood

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that the best of women are four: Maryam binti 'Imran, Khadijah binti Khuwaylid, Fatimah binti Muhammad Rasullullah and Asiya, the wife of Fir'aun (Pharoah of Egypt).

It is not a coincidence that they were all mothers. Mariam was the mother of Prophet Isa alayhissalam; Khadijah was the mother of five of the Prophet's children, one of the them was Fatimah, the mother of Hasan and Hussain who will be leaders of the youth in Paradise (as mentioned in the hadith); Asiya was the foster mother of Prophet Musa alayhissalam. May Allah be pleased with all of them.

What we can glean from this fact is that the nurturing that a pious woman gives her child, can elevate her to the highest level.

Taking care of our family is a great service for Allah and the reward is tremendous. Looking after and raising our children is the best devotion to Allah. We should make our intention now that we want to raise our children to be people of taqwa, people who conform to the Divine and Sacred Laws and avoid haram (prohibitions). Once we do that, every single act we do, the reward is incredible.

What is in the heart of Islam is combating our ego (nafs). You have to lower your nafs when you are dealing with your children. And it is an endless effort just to keep basic things in order (almost a 24/7 job, it didn't go away even when you were able to catch a sleep). And if you don't have a compassionate and merciful spouse, you have to step on your ego even more. But, without realizing it, you learn to control your anger and you teach your nafs to be patient and ignore or subdue your own desires.

So, if you feel distracted and have no time to yourself to do extra worship while you see young people have memorized Qur'an and are advanced in their knowledge, don't feel that you are missing out or falling behind. Don’t underestimate the spiritual benefits of getting distracted by your children when you are trying to pray, read Qur'an, study or do dhikr. The moment the distraction is lessened, the fruits will start coming, and you will continue to harvest the fruits of your relatively short labor long after you are gone, inshaAllah.

Article on Motherhood By Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller (may Allah preserve him and increase him)

When she has her first baby, she must manage for another life even more dependent on her personal sacrifices. By the second, third, or fourth child, her days and nights belong almost entirely to others. Whether she has a spiritual path or not, such a mother can seldom resist a glance at the past, when there were more prayers, more meanings, more spiritual company, and more serenity. When Allah opens her understanding, she will see that she is engaged in one of the highest forms of worship, that of producing new believers who love and worship Allah. She is effectively worshipping Allah for as many lifetimes she has children, for the reward of every spiritual work her children do will be hers, without this diminishing anything of their own rewards: every ablution, every prayer, every Ramadan, every hajj, and even the works her children will in turn pass on to their offspring, and, so on till the end of time. Even if her children do not turn out as she wishes, she shall be requited in paradise forever according to her intention in raising them, which was that they should be godly.

Aside from the tremendous reward, within the path itself it is noticeable that many of those who benefit most from khalwa or ‘solitary retreat of dhikr’ are women who have raised children. With only a little daily dhikr and worship over the years, but much toil and sacrifice for others, they surpass many a younger person who has had more free time, effort, and ‘spiritual works.’ What they find is greater because their state with Allah is greater; namely, the awe, hope, and love of the Divine they have realized by years of sincerity to Him.

May Allah grant us righteous children and offspring and help us raise our children to be His best servants. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

In The Court Of Divine Justice

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

It maybe that people don't know what bad things you are doing or sins you are committing in private, or that you are insincere in your worship and doing good (e.g. showing off, wanting fame or praises, to accumulate wealth or to gain some other worldly benefit), but Allah is Ar-Raqib, the Watchful, Who observes all that you do.

Allah Almighty is closer to you than your jugular vein, and even if you can't see Him, know that He sees you.

So be mindful of Allah in everything that you do. They are being recorded.

And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein (16) When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. (17) Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]. (18)
[Qur'an Qaf 50:16-18]

You might get away with your bad in this world, but on the Day of Judgment, your limbs will testify against you.

And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when the enemies of Allah will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven] assembled in rows, (19) Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do. (20) And they will say to their skins, "Why have you testified against us?" They will say, "We were made to speak by Allah, who has made everything speak; and He created you the first time, and to Him you are returned. (21) And you were not covering yourselves, lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allah does not know much of what you do. (22) And that was your assumption which you assumed about your Lord. It has brought you to ruin, and you have become among the losers." (23)
[Qur'an Fussilat 41:19-23]

On a Day when their tongues, their hands and their feet will bear witness against them as to what they used to do. (24)
[Qur'an An-Nur 24:24]

You won't be able to lie anymore for a seal will be placed over your mouth.

That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn. (65)
[Qur'an Ya-Sin 36:65]

May Allah Almighty help us be vigilant over our actions and make us among the Muttaqin (Godfearing). Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

Are You Happy When Your Mother Says NO?

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

How to be happy?

Happiness is relative and not determined by objective factors, but by how you feel inside.

You probably were happier when you were making $1000 a month as a part-time teaching assistant in college then than now making $150,000 as a computer engineer of a company, where you are putting 13-15 hours a day at work and on your computer again at home, until 2 in the morning, trying to complete your work or meet a project deadline. Although you may have a much higher purchasing power, that you can buy a lot more of things, but what kind of life is that? How can you be happy?

Likewise, you probably be happier making $300 a month in Cairo where your neighbors are making $150 a month, than making $150,000 a year in Beverly Hills where your neighbors are making much more, double, triple or to the millions.

Happiness is also relative to your expectations.

People often overestimate the misery they will experience after a marital breakup, losing a job or a promotion, contracting an illness, or when your mother says NO to you for wanting to marry someone you like.

People also overestimate the pleasure they will get from graduating from high school or law school or having a PhD, buying a nice car, getting a promotion, buying a house or moving to the coast with ocean and mountain views, being accepted to a prestigious college or college program, getting married to someone you love, having a baby boy, your ball team winning, and so on.

So, lower your expectations about the pleasure you'll get from things of this world. Things of this dunya are always accompanied with problems, worry and bitterness even though they appear outwardly to be pleasurable.

Avoid consumerism. The things you own do come to own you. Consumerism leads to unhappiness. We don't need much to be happy. Unfortunately, people have been programmed from birth to see through the lens of consumerism. One way to start deprogramming is to view this documentary, Century Of The Self, and then sell or give away many of your possessions and, more importantly, drastically change your purchasing patterns.

Develop the habit of gratitude. First and foremost, be thankful to Allah for everything--for the gift of life and for maintaining and sustaining you.

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' " [Qur'an Ibrahim 14:7]

Everything in your life is a blessing--good or bad. Even the little or big effort you have put to attain what you have attained was a blessing from Allah. Spend time reflecting on these blessings throughout the day. And at the end of each day, write down 10 things you are grateful for: the roof over your head, the blessing of safety, the blessing of health, the taste of cheesecake, the taste of cold sugar cane juice or the breeze of cool air in the hot summer, the ability to go to the bathroom, having a brother or sister, the sickness, the divorce, losing your iphone...and so on. I am sure you can list more than 10 and if you want to do so, go right ahead, and for each one, say La illaha illallah wa Allahu Akbar or SubhanAllah or send blessings to the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, or any dhikr of Allah. It may sound childish, but it works.

Find your purpose and live it. Islam gives you a sense of meaning and purpose. Finding motivating purpose is crucial to happiness. You will find the happiest person are those who have relationship with Allah. They are happy even when they don't have the things that you want. And they are happier than you will ever be even when you get the things that you want. This is because Allah creates happiness in the heart of the servant when he attaches his heart to Allah. We think otherwise because we are distracted by dunya, other people, shaytan and our lusts, desires and ego (nafs).

Happiness will not come from reading this article or any other articles you find on the internet. Happiness will come when you do the things that are recommended. Remember knowledge is only a small part of our life. The biggest part is action, which include constantly turning to Allah in repentance and du'a.

May Allah grant us happiness in this life and the next and save us from the punishment of the Hellfire. Ameen,

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.
