Why Do Muslims Have To Pray At Specific Times?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Prayers have been prescribed for the believers at specific times. Allah Almighty says,
إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَو‌ٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا ﴿١٠٣...

...Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times. (103)
[Qur'an, An-Nisa' 4:103]

What is the wisdom? No doubt, the wisdom return to our benefit because Allah doesn't need our prayers nor any other acts of worship.

The negative quality of our nafs (lower self) is procrastination -- leaving things off for later. Procrastination can become a serious problem in life. How do you know if you're a chronic procrastinator? You'll find that you procrastinate at home, at school, at work, in relationships. You don’t pay your bills on time (so your car get repossessed)... you don't get to your important job interview on time (so you don't get the job)...you get to your exam late (so you fail your exam and couldn't graduate on time)...you don't get to your wedding on time (so your bride calls off the wedding)...

When Allah legislates for us to pray at a particular time, we are forced to do it and that will help us remove procrastination.

Allah is very gentle with us -- He left us a block of time within which we can pray so that it won't be too difficult for us but difficult enough.

There is a level of difficulty to the rulings of Shari'ah which is for our benefit. This is something we have to struggle against so that one day we will come out strong and beautiful.

Lessons from a butterfly -- One day, a small opening appeared in a cocoon; a man sat and watched for the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then, it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could not go any further. So the man decided to help the butterfly: he took a pair of scissors and opened the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a withered body, it was tiny and had shriveled wings. The man continued to watch because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would open, enlarge and expand, to be able to support the butterfly’s body, and become firm. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a withered body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man, in his kindness and his goodwill did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening, were nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings, so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any difficulties, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as we could have been. And never been able to fly.

May Allah grant us wisdom and strength to fulfill His purpose of creating us. Ameen.

And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers. (55) And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. (56) [Qur'an, Ad-Dhariyat 51:55-56]

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
