بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum
I pray that you are well.
If we understand the importance of Qur'an and sunnah and live it, we will have a rich life because Islam is rich in all aspect of our lives. The problem is that we don't take the time to learn and understand the Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Messenger, Allah bless him and grant him peace--we bog ourselves in the regimen and the nitty gritty of technicalities. We pray and fast in Ramadhan and don't do haram (you think you don't), now we think we have it down--we are Muslims and they are not. Technically, yes, we can call ourselves Muslims if we pray and fast. Similar to someone who knows how to cut and sew, is he a surgeon? Will you trust him to do surgery on you? There are more to be a surgeon than just cutting and sewing. Likewise there is more than rituals to Islam. There is MANNERS. Manners with Him and manners with His creation. These manners are meant to bring happiness to our lives (this life and the next) and to people around us. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, was sent to perfect noble character. And good character weighs heavier on the scale in the Day of Judgment. So this aught to tell us the importance of good character and good manners. And we should be very conscious of this in going about our everyday lives.
Just a smile can make a person's day but will you be able to smile at people all the time? Just a three letter word "plz" for "please" can make a mother's day. Sidebar: My 17 year old son would send me a text message when he was ready to be picked up from his evening classes at school for the last few months. The text was short and to the point "pick me up". One day I received a text from him via his friend's phone (he lost his phone, the 3rd time, and I did not get him another one just to teach him a lesson). The text was "pick me up plz." The "plz" was a soothing breeze to my heart! When I saw him I immediately told him how I felt and from then on he appended the word "plz" to his text message. MashaAllah. A few days ago, he decided to clean the house (he said just for me) and to our amazement he found the phone that he thought he lost at school behind a couch! He was elated of course and I told him to take wudu' and make 2 raka'at prayer to thank Allah.
If you take a course or two and read some Islamic books, you can begin to develop a taste of the richness of Islam. They give you a few considerations and some ideas of what to do. But many things in Islam can be answered in more than one ways depending on who the people are and what the circumstances are, and only by keeping the company of knowledgeable people who have good manners will help you practice your knowledge and develop a taste of what is appropriate and what is not appropriate, which no amount of book learning or studies can give. This is the idea of wisdom. We ask Allah to give us wisdom.
Allah give wisdom to whoever He wills and whoever He gives wisdom He gives tremendous good. Good character is based a lot on wisdom. Having wisdom is when you have a situation and you know what is the best thing to do to cover all of your areas.
"He gives the Wisdom to whomsoever He will, and whoso is given the Wisdom, has been given much good; yet none remembers but men possessed of minds." Qur'an Al Baqarah 2:269
"Whomsoever We will, We raise in rank; over every man of knowledge is One who knows." Qur'an Yusuf 12:76
May Allah bless your day. Ameen. Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

Ask not what they can do for you...
BismillahirRahmaniRahim
Assalaamu alaykum
I pray that you are well.
We had a beautiful khatm Qur'an on Friday at Masjid Al-Ittehad with young members of the community reciting the last juz 'Amma beautifully followed by du'a. MashaAllah. May Allah accept our worship and reward everyone very well for participating in this event every month. Ameen. InshaAllah, please continue to strive to read at least a juz a day of the Qur'an with your family. Our next khatm will be on Friday, March 19, 2010.
To continue with our sharing...
Muslims are selfless, grateful and worshipful, not selfish, greedy and indignant. A grateful, thankful servant of Allah obeys Him. Obedience to Allah benefits us in this life and the next life. Obedience to Allah takes you to Paradise by His Mercy.
"And when your Lord proclaimed, "If you are thankful, surely I will increase you, but if you are thankless My chastisement is surely terrible." Qur'an Ibrahim 14:7
We should not be lax with our responsibilities. Always on the look out on other people's need. Just like we try to instill a sense of responsibility in our children, we should have this in ourselves towards our Creator and other people--our parents, family, relatives, teachers, neighbors, friends, fellow Muslims and humankind.
We have a lot of work to do--we can't afford to waste time, but don't despair because Allah will make way for you to do all these if you are sincere. Pray as if you are going to die tomorrow and work as if you are going to live forever. We need to constantly reevaluate ourselves to make sure we are fulfilling our responsibilities and we are doing things in the manner that Allah wants us to do.
"...Help one another to piety and godfearing; do not help each other to sin and enmity. And fear God; surely God is terrible in retribution." Qur'an Al-Maidah 5:2
Everyone of us have rights in our dealings with one another that Allah grants us, but we should not be demanding our rights, rather we look at the other side for what they need and give, and be sincere and generous in your giving, and you will have the forgiveness and a tremendous reward from Al-Karim in this life and the next.
"Allah has promised those that believe, and do deeds of righteousness; they shall have; forgiveness and a mighty wage." Qur'an Al-Maidah 5:9
This is a good way of looking at our responsibilities. Based on a famous inaugural speech, ask not what your spouse, your parents, your children, your community, .... can do for you -- ask what you can do for them.
If each one of us take our responsibilities seriously and ask ourselves this before we start demanding our rights, the world will be a better place. We can't change people, but we can change ourselves and tawfiq is from Allah. So start with ourselves today and make du'a for Allah to guide everyone.
And Allah knows best.
May Allah guide us and grant us tawfiq in discharging our responsibilities excellently. Ameen.

The inevitable
BismillahirRahmanirRahim
Assalaamu alaykum
Dear Friends
I pray that you are well.
The son of 'Umar, Allah be very pleased with both father and son, used to say: At evening do not expect to live till morning, and at morning do not expect to live till evening. Take from your health for your illness and from your life your death. (Bukhari)
Whenever 'Uthman ibn Affan (the son-in-law of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the third Caliph, the one among the 10 promised paradise), Allah be very pleased with him, came near a grave he wept so much that his beard became wet. Someone remarked to him that when he mentioned the Garden and the Fire he never wept as much, and he said: 'I heard the Messenger of God, Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: "The grave is the first of the Hereafter's stages. If one is saved from it then what comes next is easier, but if one is not saved from it, then what comes next is ever harder."
On the Day of Judgment everything will be accounted for. "Upon that day men shall issue in scatterings to see their works, and whoso has done an atom's weight of good shall see it, and whoso has done an atom's weight of evil shall see it." Qur'an The Earthquake 99:6-8
And no soul will be dealt unjustly. "And We shall set up the just balances for the Resurrection Day, so that not one soul shall be wronged anything; even if it be the weight of one grain of mustard-seed We shall produce it, and sufficient are We for reckoners." Qur'an Al-Anbiya 21:47
So hasten to do good deeds and forgiveness from Allah
"And every one has a direction to which he should turn, therefore hasten to (do) good works; wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together; surely Allah has power over all things." Qur'an Al-Baqarah 2:148
"And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord; and a Garden, the extensiveness of which is (as) the heavens and the earth, it is prepared for the godfearing." Qur'an AleImran 3:133
Set your goals high for Allah. Nothing of this world worth anything when you are put in the grave except your good deeds including righteous off springs who pray for us. So rush to do good deeds and raise your children well.
Please take a moment to read this very touching story of a little girl who is in coma. You can't help but cry along listening to the beautiful voice and to reassess your relationship with Allah and realize that you have not done enough to make sure your children are given the necessary tools to know Allah. InshaAllah this story will increase your iman and inspire you to do more.
May Allah give her shifa' quickly and have mercy on her, her parents and all of us and those who have passed. Ameen.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun.

She become alone without her parents, and parents friends decided to find her relatives in Egypt so they can take her to them..
Suddenly, Bar`ah start having severe pain like her mother, after few tests and check up it was confirmed with the cancer... at the surprise of every one she said (( Alhamdu Lillah now I will meet my parents ))
All family friends were shocked and surprised, this little girl facing calamity after calamity and she is patient and satisfied with what Allah ordained for her.
People start hearing about Bar`ah and her story, and a Saudi guy decided to take care of her .. he send her to UK for treatment of this disease.

Completing the Qur'an
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum
Dear Friends
I pray that you are well.
Alhamdulillah, we completed our group reading of the Qur'an this month last night with more participation than last month. MashaAllah! May Allah accept your works and reward you well. Ameen.
InshaAllah, we plan to do the khatma again next month but a little differently. I would like to invite all of you to read a chapter of the Qur'an each day starting today (with the intention of joining this group). Simply complete reading by maghrib Friday, February 19 when we will do the khatma as a group at Masjid Vista inshaAllah. For those who do not know Arabic, it is best to read the translation first so you get an idea of what you will be reading. For those who can't read Arabic, you can read the translation and make a plan to learn how to read the Arabic. May Allah reward you and give you tawfiq. Ameen.
We should continue maintaining our Qur'an recitation and do much of it. The Righteous Forbears had different habits regarding the time in which they would finish the Qur'an. Some of them would finish the Qur'an once every 2 months or every month; once every ten nights or every eight; most of them every 7 night; some every 6 nights, every 5 or every 4; many every 3 nights; some every 2 days, every day and night, twice every day and night, twice each day, and 8 times each day (4 by night and 4 by day). Those who complete the recitation of the Qur'an every day include Uthman ibn Affan, al-Shafi', Mujahid, Sa'id ibn Jubayr and Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be very pleased with them all).
We should aspire to be like the Righteous Forebears. Don't say "I can't." We have time. Remember Allah create time and so He can expand time for us. InshaAllah, if you sincerely desire to do this, Allah will facilitate you to get there. That is His promise and we believe Allah keep His promises. It may take you your whole life to get there or maybe you never get there but you have made the good intention and even if you only made it to read a page a day for the rest of your life inshaAllah, the reward is still tremendous. Allah is All-Generous and All-Merciful. Remember, the Righteous Forebears did this without having dishwashers to help clean their dishes, washing machine and dryer to help clean and dry their clothes, no light switch to turn on the light, electric/gas stove to cook, just to name a few of our conveniences that have made many of us weak and lazy. We have all the ease and convenience in the world and yet for many of us can't do even a minute fraction of what they could. Excuses won't do us any good.
And Allah knows best.
May Allah bless your time. Ameen.

Reciting and Bearing Quran/our Monthly Khatma Qur'an every 3rd Friday at Maghrib
BismillahirRahmanirRahim
Assalaamu alaykum
I pray that you are well.
"Surely, those who recite the Book of God, and establish Prayer, and spend, secretly and openly, from that which He has bestowed on them, they look forward to imperishable gain, so that He will fully recompense them their wages and increase them of His grace. Indeed, He is All-Forgiving, All-Thankful." Qur'an Faatir 35:29-30
The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
"The best among you is one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it." (Bukhari)
"The one who recites the Qur'an and is skillful therein will be with the obedient, noble, recording angels; and the one who reads the Qur'an stammering, it being difficult for him, has two rewards." (Bukhari)
"The likeness of a believer who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citron: its scent is fragrant and its taste delicious. The likeness of a believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of a date: it has no fragrance and its taste is delicious. The likeness of a hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is a like a water lily: its scent is fragrant and its taste is bitter. And a likeness of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like a bitter colocynth: it is scentless and its taste is bitter. (Bukhari)
"Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Judgment it will come to intercede for its companion." (Muslim)
Know that a group reciting together is recommended act. "No group remembers Allah except that angels encompass them, mercy envelopes them, and tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those in His presence." (Tirmidhi).
InshaAllah, our next monthly group recitation of Qur'an will be this Friday, January 22, 2010 (and will continue every 3rd Friday of the month inshaAllah). Physical venue is at Masjid Vista, California. Locals will start reading after Maghrib prayer 5:30 pm. Everybody to complete reading by by 7:00 pm California time. Khatam and du'a after Isha prayer (8:00 pm California time) followed by refreshments and snacks.
This event is open to all Muslims and their families. For those who are local, please bring your families to the masjid for the khatam even if you cannot read. InshaAllah you gain the full benefits and Allah mentions you to those in His presence the same.
There are 5 categories of reciters and you know who you are:
1) Those who are local or within the vicinity of masjid Vista and have been assigned the chapters to recite. You may recite at anytime after Friday prayer or join us at the masjid at Maghrib.
2) Those who are local or within the vicinity of masjid Vista and have not been assigned the chapters to recite, you may sign up the chapter(s) you would like to recite on the sign-up sheet posted by the library door. You may recite at anytime after Friday prayer or join us at the masjid at Maghrib.
3) Those who are remote and have been assigned the chapters to recite. You may recite at anytime after Friday prayer at your locality.
4) Those who are remote and have not been assigned any chapters to recite. If you would like to join the group, make an intention for this and start from Juz 1, Al-Fatiha and Al-Baqarah. You may read as many chapters as you like each time. Keep record of what you have recited and continue to the next juz next month.
5) Those who cannot read the Qur'an in Arabic, you may read the translation of the Qur'an, begin with Juz 1, Al-Fatiha and Al-Baqarah. You may read as many chapters as you like. Keep record of what you have read and continue to the next chapter next month.
Some etiquette with the Qur'an and recitation:
1. Make a sincere intention that you are doing this for Allah. "Actions are only valued according to their intentions, and each person has only what he has intended." (Bukhari and Muslim)
"And they were ordered no more than to worship Allah sincerely, keeping religion pure to Him, being upright, to establish the Prayer, and to give obligatory charity. And that is the worthy religion." Qur'an 98:5
2. One should bring to mind that he is addressing Allah and therefore should read as if one sees Allah Most High, and even if he does not see Allah, verily Allah Most High sees him. (from Hadith Jibril)
So before reciting the Qu'ran, clean the mouth with toothstick or the like, be in a state of ritual purity, be in a clean place and minimum distraction, face the Qibla, seek protection in Allah from the Shaytan.
3. At the beginning and during recitation, one's state should be that of humility and reflection. "This is a Book that We have sent down to you, full blessing, that they may reflect upon its signs." Qur'an 38:29.
4. Recite distinctly, not rapidly.
5. Supplicate while reciting. Whenever one passes by a verse containing the mention of mercy, it is recommended that he ask Allah from His bounty. Whenever he passes by a verse containing the mention of chastisement, he seeks protection with Allah from evil or from chastisement, or he says, "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'afiya (O Allah, I ask You for safe-being). Whenever one passes by a verse of declaring Allah transcendent beyond any imperfection, he should declare Him transcendent beyond imperfection and say, "Subhanahu wa ta'ala (He is Transcendent and Most High) or "Tabarak wa ta'ala (He is Blessed and Most High)
May Allah make us sincere in our worship and envelope us in His Mercy and Generosity. Ameen.
Wassalaam

Ameen.
