Not Even An Ant

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

A true Muslim is who other Muslims are safe. Other Muslims have nothing to fear from his tongue and his hands.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
The Muslim is the one other Muslims are safe with regards to his tongue and his hands.
A man was seen backbiting. He was asked, "Did you fight against the Romans this year?" He answered, "No." Then he was asked, "Did you fight the [pagan] Turks or Indians?" He replied, " No." "How come your enemies of the believers are safe from you, and your Muslim brother is not safe from you?"

Nothing deserve imprisonment more than the tongue because once it uttered a word, you cannot retrieve it. It is a done deal. So, use the tongue wisely.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, "Who is the righteous person?" He replied, "He is the one who doesn't conceal evil and doesn't harm even an ant."

There has been more human killing just in this past century than anytime before. One rocket launched, it can wipe out the entire village/town and devastate people's lives down to many generations.

Killing is one of the gravest sin that anybody can commit. You don't want to meet Allah with somebody's blood on your hands.

But ever wonder how many ants are being killed and colonies of ants destroyed from all the shootings, tear gas, bombings, army tanks rolling on the ground and human blood flowing on the earth?

May Allah save us from evil. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your du'as. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

A Beloved Word

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

All of us say to each other Assalaamu alaykum (may well being be yours). This is a prayer for well being which is superior prayer to the other greetings like Hayyak Allah (may Allah give you life).

Life without well-being is punishment. Life with well-being is life.

Assalaamu alaykum is the prayer that we pray for each other and also as declaration that we made to each other through which we declare, "I bid you no harm, I wish the good for you, you have peace with regards to me, you will not receive any evil from me, you are safe from me."

So when you meet someone and he says Asssalaamu alaykum, know that he is declaring that you are in peace with regard to him and he is wishing only well being to you. So you respond by saying, wa alaykum salaam (and upon you be peace), or better, wa alaykum salaam warahmatullah (and upon you be the peace and mercy of Allah), or wa alaykum salaam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh (and upon you be the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah).

When meeting a stranger for the first time, one can figure out if this stranger is a foe or a friend. That's why the ulama' said if somebody coming on a winding road on a horse and if he sees someone walking ahead of him, it is obligatory for him (the one on the horse) to say Assalaamu alaykum.

In Islamic law, it is not obligatory to start a Salaam but obligatory to answer the Salaam. It is a greeting of prayer and an announcement of brotherhood. Allah says this greeting of Assalaamu alaykum is a greeting from Allah full of blessings and very pure and goodly. So we thank Allah for the blessing of the Salaam and we initiate Salaam.

When those who believe in Our Signs come to you, say: "Salaamun 'Alaikum" (peace be on you); your Lord has written (prescribed) Mercy for Himself, so that, if any of you does evil in ignorance, and thereafter repents and does righteous good deeds (by obeying Allah), then surely, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
Qur'an Al-Anaam 6:54

Allah is As-Salaam (The Possessor of Salaam) He has made this word beloved to us. He called our religion Islam, the thing that brings about Salaama (pure well being). This is the greeting that He has chosen for this religion.

We say Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh at the end of each prayer everyday at least 5 times a day. Peace to the right (to the angels and people); peace to the left (to the angels and people). It is a complete spread of well being.

The dwellers of Paradise will be greeted with salaam, by Allah, by the angels and by each other. They hear "Peace! Peace!"

Only the saying,'Peace! Peace'.
Qur'an 56:26

Peace! - a Word (of salutation) from a Lord Most Merciful!
Qur'an Yaseen 36:58

The "Peace of Allah" is an atmosphere which sums up Heaven even better than "Bliss".

The words sums up the attainment of the final Goal, for it explains the nature of the Most High. He is not only a Lord and Cherisher, but a Lord Whose supreme glory is Mercy, Peace, and Harmony!

Allahumma anta As-Salaam wa minka As-Salaam. Tabarakta ya Dha Al-Jalali wa Al-Ikram

O Allah, You are As-Salaam and from You is all peace, blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love each other. Shall I guide you to something if you did it you will love each other? ... Spread the Salaam among yourselves.
May Allah grant us well being and make us true agents of peace. May Allah send peace to all places where He is being remembered. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. JazakAllahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Losing Time of Intimacy with Allah

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The single most precious thing a human can have is his moments of closeness (the feelings of intimacy) with Allah. Time of intimacy with Allah passed you by when you could be intimate with Allah but you chose to be intimate with other than Allah.

Prophet Daud (alayhissalaam) was extremely diligent in worship. He used to stay up at night and perform prayers and fasted every other day. He is described in the Qur'an as being strong and endeavoring in worship and extremely merciful.

Prophet Daud cried a lot. So Allah revealed to him, "What is making you cry? If it is for fear of the Fire, I have give you safety from it; if is from hope for Paradise, I have given it to you; if it is the incident from the two opponents [as Allah mentioned in Qur'an Sad 38:22-24], I have pleased you. So what is making you cry?" So Daud increased in his crying. Daud said, "I am only crying because of what left me of the purity of that time. Please give it back to me." It was said to him, "No, O Daud, there is no way to return that time."

In other words, when the time has gone and if a person missed that time, he can't get that time back.

Prophet Musa (alayhissalam) asked, "O my lord, where can I find you?" It was answered, "With those whose hearts are broken for My sake."

May Allah grant us closeness and feelings of intimacy with Him. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your du'as. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Falling, Calling, or Stalling?

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

It seems just yesterday we asked Allah to enable us to reach Ramadhan. Now that it has arrived, it is leaving us so soon. But do you feel any change other than perhaps being a few pounds lighter?

Fasting is a means to cleanse our body, purify our souls and bring us closer to the Lord Mighty and Majestic. If we do it right, following the ways of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the righteous people, we will benefit tremendously from fasting this Ramadhan.

If you haven't been fasting, you should start now. Fasting in the month of Ramadhan is one of the most important supports of Islam that we stand on. If you don't fast, you are throwing away one crucial support of the religion and you will eventually fall.

The Qur'an warns us to prepare for the next life.

Allah Almighty says,

Everyone shall taste the death. Then unto Us you shall be returned.
[Qur'an al-Ankabut 29:57]

Death creeps into us with every breath we take. It is so real that it is as if it is present now. You might be praying and someone decided to shoot, killing you and many others; or you might be shopping in a bakery and a bomb exploded, killing you and many others; or you might be skiing and suddenly you are taken by an avalanche and you are nowhere to be found; or you might be walking on the sidewalk and a car suddenly swerved and fatally hit you, or you might be working in a farm and a drone "accidentally" strikes you; or you might be working in a high rise building and a plane crashes into it; or you might be on a cruise and the ship sinks, or you might be flying back from your vacation destination and the plane crashes, or simply you go to sleep one night and never woke up.

When Allah wants to take someone back, there is no warning.

Allah has allowed us to reach this blessed month of Ramadhan so we may taste the blessings of Ramadhan. So be thankful to Him that you are alive today so He may bring you closer to Him. We should then strive to increase our worship and good deeds during these remaining days of Ramadhan.

Don't let our today be the same as yesterday for we will lose out on the opportunity to be close to Him. We should consider each and every action we do today is our last. This is the key to a good ending.

It should be the desire of every Muslim to draw closer to the All Merciful. By drawing closer to Allah, we may gain His help and mercy in this life and the next.

Show mercy to Allah's creatures through good character, fulfill other's rights and do not wrong anybody.

Allah is merciful to those who are merciful. This is not a slogan. Life on this earth is replete with trials and tribulations (fitnah)--people killing innocent people, terrorism, tyranny, criminals, political crises, natural disasters, economic disasters, social crises, environmental problems, health problems, neighbor problems, children problems, in-law problems, marital problems, money problems, internet problems, and so on. Whether you are directly affected by it or not at the moment, don't think you are safe. Tribulation spreads like the waves of the sea.

It is related that Hudhayfa said that 'Umar said, "Does anyone amongst you remember what the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said about trial and tribulation (fitnah)?' Hudhayfa said, 'I heard him say, "The trial (fitnah) of a man in respect of his wife, wealth, children and neighbors is expiated by prayer, fasting and sadaqa." He said, 'I am not asking about that, but rather the tribulation which spreads like the waves of the sea." Hudhayfa said, "There is a closed door in front of it." He said, "Will it be broken down or opened?" He said, "It will be broken down." He said, "Then it will never be closed until the Day of Rising." We said to Masruq, "Ask him if 'Umar know what the door was?" He said, "Yes, as surely as night follows day."'"

Only with imam (faith) that we can bear the fitnah and difficulties in life. The strength of our iman determines how we cope and deal with problems and disasters when they appear in our backyard. Therefore, we have to nurture and protect our iman. Our iman is so precious that the shaytans (whether of the jinn or human) are jealous of us. Shaytan is always lurking to steal our precious iman from us.

Allah, out of His mercy, sent us protective spheres to protect our Iman. These are acts that Allah made obligatory upon us (e.g. prayer, zakat/charity, fasting, performing hajj, good treatment of parents, maintaining family ties, seeking sacred knowledge, abstaining from prohibited matters, etc.); the sunnah of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace (e.g. supererogatory prayers, zikr and glorification of Allah, sunnah fasting, calling upon Allah in du'a, reciting/listening to the Qur'an); and various propriety acts (e.g. being in wudu' constantly, observing our manners and points of etiquette, covering our nakedness even when alone, using miswak in wudu, keeping good company).

If they are absent then the shaytan can pierce into your heart and steal your imam. If they are present but weak, eventually the shaytan will be able to steal your iman, slowly but surely like the enemy army shelling a weak fortress.

So, it is not sufficient to leave your food and drink during the day, but to increase your acts of worship and good works in this blessed month with sincerity and excellence.

Remove bad habits. Pick one or two bad character traits or bad habits that you have and start changing it. Be kind to your parents and be generous to your family and guests. Don't harm the environment we live in. Be good to animals and plants.

When you hear all the injustices, killings, massacres that have been going on in Muslim countries, this should concern you a lot and you should do something to effect change. We cannot just be bystanders.

Allah Almighty says,

You are the best Ummah singled out for mankind: you enjoin what is right (ma'ruf), forbid what is wrong (munkar), and believe in Allah...
[Qur'an AleImran 3:110]

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
If one of you sees something wrong, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart and this is the weakest faith.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that the du'a is the weapon of the believers. So, raise your hands and make du'a for our brethren, the weak and those who are suffering from injustices.

Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? ...
[Qur'an An-Naml 27:62]

Your Lord has said, “Call Me, I will respond to you. Definitely those who show arrogance against worshipping Me shall enter Jahannam (Hell) with disgrace. (60)
[Qur'an Ghafir 40:60]

Let us build a close relationship with Allah by making much du'a to Him. He loves it when His slave calls upon Him and it angers Him if His slave does not call upon Him.

May Allah grant us tawfiq and He alone gives success.

And Allah knows best.

Finding the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr)

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

We are approaching the last 10 days of the blessed month of Ramadhan. In it there is Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power). This night is described in the Qur'an as "better than a thousand months."

Allah says,

Behold, We sent it down on the Night of Power; (1) And what shall teach thee what is the Night of Power? (2) The Night of Power is better than a thousand months; (3) in it the angels and the Spirit descend, by the leave of their Lord, upon every command. (4) Peace it is, till the rising of dawn. (5)
(Qur'an Al-Qadr 97:3)

Allah, through His kindness to the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his Ummah, the last nation which Allah called the best nation raised to mankind, gives this night.

You are the best Ummah singled out for mankind: you enjoin what is right (ma'ruf), forbid what is wrong (munkar), and believe in Allah...
[Qur'an AleImran 3:110]

The secret of the last 10 nights of Ramadhan is the hope of finding Laylatul Qadr. Truly impoverish is the one who does not have the desire to find this night.

Any good deed done on this night such as prayers, reciting the Qur'an, remembering Allah, and so on is better than acting for one thousand months which do not contain the night of Qadr. Unlike the previous nations, we don't have a long life span to perform a huge amount of worship. Therefore, we should devote ourselves in worship during this last 10 nights.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time. (Muslim)

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
Whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven.
(Bukhari and Muslim).

So, don't spare any moment during these last 10 nights with things other than worshiping and thanking the Lord, and asking for His forgiveness.

Aisha, Allah be pleased with her, said:
I asked the Messenger of Allah: 'O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.' (Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee).
(Ahmad, ibn Majah, Tirmidhi).

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ascended the minbar and said: "Ameen, Ameen, Ameen." It was said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, why did you do that?" He said, "Jibreel said to me, `May Allah rub his nose in the dust, that person who Ramadhan comes and his sins are not forgiven,' and I said, Ameen'. Then he said, `May Allah rub his nose in the dust, that person who lives to see his parents grow old, one or both of them, but he does not enter Paradise,' and I said, `Ameen'. Then he said, `May Allah rub his nose in the dust, that person in whose presence you are mentioned and he does not send blessings upon you,' and I said, `Ameen.'" [Tirmidhi and Ahmad]

Abu Hurayra narrated that the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylatul Qadr while nourishing his faith with self-evaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven.
[Bukhari and Muslim).

This is a good time to take a vacation from work so you can focus on Allah with various forms of worship (e.g. learning and reciting the Qur'an, memorizing some Qur'an and hadith, more and longer prayers, making lots of du'a, dhikr, put into practice your knowledge of the Qur'an and Hadith, contemplating and reflecting on the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an, read a book on the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace--his life and his characteristics to increase your love for him) and i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) at the masjid. A woman may designate a place in her home for i'tikaf. If you are married you should get the permission of your husband to perform i'tikaf.

It was a practice of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, to spend the last 10 days and nights of Ramadhan in the masjid for i'tikaf.

Try to make your prayers longer, deeper and meaningful. If you are familiar with longer Surahs, read the translation and explanation and then pray reciting these Surahs, carefully reflecting on the meaning while you pray. Even if you are only familiar with the shorter Surahs, read the translation and explanation beforehand, and then pray reflecting on the message of the Surahs. This is a good way to develop the habit of concentration, even in regular prayers, and inshaAllah this habit will stay with you after Ramadhan.

Ask yourself what you really want from Allah. Make a list of each and everything that you want that is lawful, no matter how small or how big it is, whether it deals with this world or not. The All Generous loves our asking Him. Ask Allah to give you those things and develop a work plan to get those things. Make long and sincere du'as with conviction every night. This can be done using the Du'as of the Sunnah or in your own language. The best thing to ask Allah is what He asks from us--ask Allah that we become firm in our slavehood, become firm in acknowledging His Lordhord and the rights of His Lordhood. One of the best times to do this is during the last part of the night.

Abu Hurayra, Allah be pleased with him, related that the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
When the last one-third of the night remains, our Lord, the Glorious One descends towards the heaven of the earth and proclaims: Who is that who supplicates for Me, and I grant his supplication? Who is that who begs Me for anything and I grant it to him? And who is that who seeks My forgiveness, and I forgive him?
(Bukhari, Muslim).

This means we should strive to wake up an hour or two before suhur and devote ourselves in worship and supplication.

Don't forget your family. Have iftar together and take them to taraweeh and qiyamu lail (night prayers) on these last 10 days. Put your regular work aside and bond with your family.

Don't forget the poor and the needy. Increase your charity. This is a great time to pay your zakat on your wealth and zakat al-fitr.

Choose one night to evaluate yourself and your situation and think about where you want to go for the next 12 months. Then take action. For example, if you haven't memorized Qur'an, ask yourself what prevented you from doing so and adopt a plan to remove the barriers and put a working schedule of memorizing the Qur'an. Don't say, "I can't." If there is a will there is a way and Allah alone gives success. So ask Allah. Nothing is too big for Allah.

May Allah give us tawfiq and make us witness Laylatul Qadr. Ameen. Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Please make du'a for the people of Egypt, the people of Syria and all the countries in distress. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Blessings of Peace and Food

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

There is no single blessing you possess but it is from Allah. Just open your fridge.

That leftover food in the fridge waiting for you to eat is a big blessing, but you don't know it and you don't like leftovers, so you throw them in the garbage. Then suddenly there is a big earthquake and the second storey of your house collapsed and your fridge and your pantry are smashed. You cannot get to the stores, everywhere is chaos--sirens, roadblocks, accidents, fires, roads flooded by broken fire hydrants. Imagine the disaster! You have to wait for the red cross helicopters to drop you food packages. Now your stomach is crying, your children are laying there like fish out of the water--they haven't eaten for 2 days. You wish for that leftover in the garbage would come back but the flies have gotten to it first!

There are two blessings that we cannot truly understand them until we lose them: blessings of peace and blessings of being fed.

For those who are living in the western Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and most of the fully developed countries, you are so blessed that you can stick your head out the car window for directions when you lost your way, without having the fear of being robbed, raped or shot at. You were so appreciative of the guy who was nice enough to stop and give you the direction--you said "Thank you." But no thank you to Allah, the One Who gives you speech to ask for direction, the One Who made it possible for the guy to give you the direction, the One Who sent the earthquake to Haiti instead of to your area, the One Who gives your country peace and stability so that you can move around freely.

The smallest of things that we take for granted in this life is a blessing from Allah and many are not grateful.

Allah Almighty says,

And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein ways of livelihood. Little are you grateful. (10)
[Qur'an Al-A'raf 7:10]

But Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim, Al-Karim (the Generous), As-Sabur (the Patient One), Al-Halim (the Forbearing) still shower His slaves with abundant blessings despite the slaves' ingratitude and heedlessness.

When there is no peace, people are afraid of each other and movements are restricted or banned, and killings and brutality run rampant, and food supply becomes low. You may not be able to imagine any of these because you have never been outside your comfort zone. But be prepared, because this can happen to anyone and any place. We don't know, only Allah knows. Allah can destroy a nation and can build a nation. Kun fa yakun. Be and it is. The Qur'an has many examples of this. Tomorrow we could wind up in the ocean--remember the 2004 Bandar Acheh Tsunami? Tomorrow a civil war could break out. When all these happen, there is nothing we can do.

So while we are still free to move, go ahead, live--but with a different attitude, the attitude should be of gratitude and living for the next life. So Allah will remember us and not let us perish in the disaster just like that.

When you look at your food next time, when you break your fast, appreciate what Allah has given you. Have a heart full of appreciation and gratitude of what is in front of you. If you can't, remember those fishermen in Gaza who can't bring fish to their families because they are not free to fish in the sea, and remember those farmers in Gaza who lost their crops to some missiles that had landed on their farms, and remember many Gaza families and children are being deprived of even basic foods due to border and supply tunnel closures.

The mark of appreciation and gratitude is that you are humble and lower yourself in front of the blessing. All the sunnah of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, is speaking to us--that we are so small, undeserving of the blessings of Allah, and the very food in front us is a treasure and we are blessed to have it and we really respect it. We are not merely saying on the tongue "Bismillah" at the beginning and "Alhamdulillah" at the end. We feel this before we eat and all the way beyond eating to the leftovers. All these have to be covered in deep veneration of Allah.

Don't cook too much that you have leftovers that food wind up in the garbage cans. Suffice to cook less for the stomachs then throwing food away. There is so much waste everywhere and it is very sad to see food go into the garbage--you see this a lot at the masjid! We tend not to respect food anymore. When I was a young girl learning how to cook, my mother would not even let me drop a grain of rice when washing the rice before cooking it. If there was a grain of rice in the drain that fell out of the pot while I was washing it, she would tell me to pick it up and give it to the chickens. But nowadays, we callously throw enormous amount of food. That is being disrespectful to food. Make a conscious effort not to waste food, the gift of Allah to us.

We must have a sense why we are doing something, what the purpose is, why we are eating. If you are eating for no purpose, then this is a big problem because this means you are living to eat instead of eating to live. Allah created the world for us, not us for the world, and He created us for Him. So we partake the world within His guidelines.

We eat to worship Him. Ultimately you are what you eat. Food and eating must be in line with the teachings and the sunnah of Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace. Otherwise, this most basic blessing and act that we enjoy can turn into a curse, ruin one's heart, ruins one's worship, becomes an obsession and many other matters that push us away from Allah.

The way the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, acted was reflecting a state that we meant to be following, to be slavely. We are expected to take this attitude from the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace. How best to incorporate them other than to approach blessings the way he approached blessings. The more we can approach things the way our Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, approached things, the easier it is to be like him in state. So learn the sunnah of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and incorporate them in your life as much as you can.

Let the waves of love for Allah, not the chain of afflictions, push us towards Him--show Him our gratitude for all His blessings.

May Allah give you tawfiq and accept your fasting and good deeds. Ameen.

Please make du'a for Egypt and the people of Egypt. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Love is Not Blind

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Love is the consequence of knowing.

The only spirit within our bodies is only here so that we might know Allah. When you truly know Allah, you will adore Him to the utmost meaning of the word.

Those who don't know Him and those who don't remember Him have only miseries because they have turned away from that very reason they are walking on this earth. Those who are distant, absent, don't know him, don't recognize Him, are miserable and their lives are extremely constricted just like their souls are constricted.

Allah Almighty says,

And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind." (124) He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?" (125)
[Qur'an Ta-Ha 20:124-125]

There is no one more deserving of our love than the All Merciful, the One who created us from nothing and bestowed us all the blessings. So to the extent that one knows the Tremendousness and the Might of Allah, His Beauty and His Perfection, His Excellence and His Generosity, is to the extent that one will know and will love Allah, Dhul Jalali Wal Ikram (The Lord of Majesty and Bounty).

People do wondrous things in expressing their love for creation and love takes all one's emotions, feelings and thoughts. So, what about when one loves Allah, the Greatest, the Most Generous, the Most Exalted, the Most Beautiful?

A believer's love is not complete until he loves Allah and His Messenger, Allah bless him and grant him peace, above all else.

Allah Almighty says,

Say, [O Muhammad], "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people." (24)
[Qur'an At-Tawba 9:24]

And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are more intense in love for Allah. And if only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment. (165)
[Qur'an Al-Baqarah 2:165]

To the extent of one's faith and knowing is one's love, for faith is connected to knowing. To the extent that one's faith increases, one's knowing increases.

Knowing Allah is required through proper reflection and contemplation on the speech of Allah and His Messenger, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and sincerely directing oneself to Him, standing at the door of His Bounty and Grace and what He has ordained of acts of worship, by reflecting on the tremendousness of His Names and Attributes Mighty and Majestic, by reflecting on His creation and His fashioning. His Names and Attributes are what govern everything in this universe. Knowing Allah in His creation is to know Allah in every moment and in every manifestation.

If one's reflection is good and its horizons expand, one's knowledge of Allah increases. So to increase knowledge of Allah is necessarily to increase in love of Allah. When love increases, then remembrance increases, for when one loves something, one makes much mention of it. With much remembrance, one's intimacy increases with the One remembered increases, and that gives one purity of knowing and purity of one's inward and much reflection on the tremendous of the Greatest and one's knowledge increases and strengthened and becomes more expansive.

Allah Almighty invites us so many times to call Him in remembrance.

So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me. (152)
[Qur'an al-Baqarah 2:152]

The sign of love is in preferring--preferring Allah and preferring His commands over all other commands and above all desires of the self, and over all wishes and inclinations of one's caprice and desires.

Allah gives worldly matters to those He loves and those He doesn't but He gives the religion only to those He loves, and truly the servants' love for Allah Almighty is their honor, rank and dignity and the means for their eternal felicity, in this life and the next.

Let us become attached to the love of Allah, more than the love of all people for the things they may love besides Allah, more than the love of those who love entertainment, travel, sports and competition because these are all manifestations of the love of people for things. If the believer is true, then their love for Allah is more intense than the love of these people for all that they may love.

May Allah make us of the people whom He loves and who love Him and make us of those who love each other for His sake, loving only for His sake, and hating only for His sake. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Gentleness in Unpleasantries

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

People who feel that their life is completely in their hands, they can't focus on anything. They are stressed and they can't sleep at night. Your self is feeble, you can't do everything. But if you rely on Allah, there is no murkiness but purity. People who is like this, Allah will take care of them.

...And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (2) And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent. (3)
[Qur'an At-Talaq 65:2-3]

Allah is Al-Wali (The Protector), Al-Wakil (The Disposer of Affairs), Al-Hafiz (The Preserver), Al-Hasib (The Reckoner).

So, we should constantly turn to Allah, ask Him to protect us, to protect our hearts from forgetting Him and to give us the ability to rely on Him.

Allah guards people's bodies and also people's hearts. Those who are dear to Him, He guards their hearts but the guarding of the heart can often happen through unpleasant things. Ibn Rajab says, part of Allah's guarding is He creates unpleasant things in their lives because through these things the person's heart is protected. Maybe you lose your job and you are out of work for a few years and people make fun of you, you can't pay your bills and all kinds of things happen to you. But this might be better for you. It might have been that job might brought on something that you wouldn't have handled properly or might keep you heedless of Allah.

Prophet Yusuf was slandered and he was unjustly imprisoned. He went through intense emotional and some physical torture and separated from his loved ones. In the end Allah made him victorious. This was his destiny.

Whoever supposes that Allah's gentleness is separated from His destiny, it is because that person is shortsighted. So whatever happens to us, no matter how difficult or painful it looks, there is gentleness in this.

So someone who goes through unpleasant things in his life is only high with Allah and he is being raised.

Someone said, whenever Allah tests you, He might throw you into a river, but He will still throw a straw for you to breathe through until things change.

Whatever He throws at you, pleasant or unpleasant, all of it is guarding you in the way He sees best.

Our job is to enter into the sphere of Allah's guardianship, not the sphere of Allah's revenge the criminals. How do we enter into the sphere of Allah's guardianship? By guarding His rights, His laws and the limits He prescribes, relying on Him and surrendering to Him and in return he will guard you with mysteries of guardians.

On the authority of Abu 'Abbaas Abdullah ibn 'Abbaas (radiAllahu'anhuma — may Allah be pleased with them two) said: I was behind The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) one day and he said, "Oh young boy! I am going to teach you some words: preserve Allah and he will preserve you. Preserve Allah and you will find him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allah; and if you seek aid, seek aid from Allah. Know! If the Ummah [nation] gathered to benefit you with something, they wouldn't benefit you except with something Allah wrote [i.e., decreed] for you. And if the Ummah gathered to harm you with something, they wouldn't be able to harm you except with something Allah wrote for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried." [At-Tirmidhi]

In a nother narration, "Preserve Allah and you will find him in front of you. Remember Allah in ease and He will remember you in
difficulty. Know! Whatever passed you by you were not going to happen to you and whatever happened to you was not going to pass
you by. Know! Indeed success is with patience, indeed victory is with difficulty, and indeed with hardship is ease."

Whoever knows Allah suffices him does not feel alienated by people turning away from him nor feel intimate/overly happy when people draw near to him out of trust that what is destined will come to him.

May Allah protect our hearts from forgetting Him and give us the ability to rely on Him. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Taking By The Hand

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Whoever Allah wills, he picks up that person and takes him by the hand and within a very short space of time this person becomes an elite on this earth. Whoever Allah puts barakah (blessing) into his age, Allah puts barakah into his time. He will realize in a very short time tremendous matters that words cannot express and fingers cannot point.

These are all Allah's manifestation.

Allah chose for Prophet Nuh (may Allah grant him peace) that he would preach for 950 years and only a relatively small number of his people would believe in him after all those years of preaching and the rest were destroyed but He chose for Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and grant him peace) 23 years after which he was victorious and His religion spread in the lands and he is the Prophet until the end of time.

Allah puts barakah however He wills in whatever He wills. He has no need for the slaves but when He wants to take someone by the hand He creates a means for it. How do we acquire the means for Allah to take us by the hand and show us the way to our advantage? We take steps towards Him.

Allah has promised that "He who draws close to Me a hand's span, I will draw close to him an arm's length. And whoever draws near Me an arm's length, I will draw near him a fathom's length. And whoever comes to Me walking, I will go to him running."

By the authority of Abu Dhar that Allah's Messenger said that Allah said: He who comes with a good deed, its reward will be ten like that or even more. And he who comes with vice, his reward will be only one like that, or I can forgive him. He who draws close to Me a hand's span, I will draw close to him an arm's length. And whoever draws near Me an arm's length, I will draw near him a fathom's length. And whoever comes to Me walking, I will go to him running. And whoever faces Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, I will meet him with forgiveness nearly as great as that, provided he does not worship something with me. (This Hadith is sound and reported by Muslim, Ibn Majah and Ahmad in his Musnad). Another prophetic tradition says: (He who met Allah associating anything with Him, will enter Hell) (Muslim)

All of this indicate that if the slave takes a step towards Allah, He takes him by the hand.

In the story of the companions of the cave, in Surah Al-Kahf, despite their youth and despite the difficulty of their age they still came towards Allah. So Allah received them graciously, and He made them a sign for all of time.

It is We who relate to you, [O Muhammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. (13) And We made firm their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression. (14)
[Qur'an Al-Kahf 18:13-14]

That is the way of Allah. He guides whomever He wills and whomever He chooses to guide he is guided towards a tremendous good. The means we achieve that good is to take steps toward Allah and asking Him and be impoverished before His kindness.

Whomever Allah wills He leads them astray and He has no need for them. What is the method to be led astray? It is taking steps away from Him, ignoring the warner of their own conscience. Allah put a warner inside human being. Let us pay attention to our warners and let us put a warner in people's hearts when they start veering and straying away from the straight path.

Somebody who wants to be the subject of Allah leading them astray is extremely easy. The person just turn away from the teachings of the Prophet, turn away from his conscience and decency and fight the warners. The steps towards sins are heavy. The steps toward lying or theft or corruption or zina or murder are heavy but if the person struggles against that and make that first step, making the second step is easy and the third easier. He will find that each step becomes easier until he breaks free from all constraints and then he becomes a free bird. And whatever he wills, he does. If he continues further, he becomes deaf, and further still, he becomes blind, and further still, he becomes finished.

Allah facilitates the way to do good and Allah lead astray the evil doers. If someone turns away from Allah the first time, they will feel guilty, the second time they will feel easier and much easier the third time until it becomes a habit. Their conscience dies for Allah puts a seal in their hearts.

Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills. (27)
[Qur'an Ibrahim 14:27]

That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. (107) Those are the ones over whose hearts and hearing and vision Allah has sealed, and it is those who are the heedless. (108)
[Qur'an An-Nahl 16:107-108]

One of the ways Allah will humiliate the sinful in Hell is by gathering them on Judgment Day on their faces, blind, deaf, and dumb.

And whoever Allah guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray - you will never find for them protectors besides Him, and We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection [fallen] on their faces - blind, dumb and deaf. Their refuge is Hell; every time it subsides We increase them in blazing fire. (97)
[Quran Al-Isra' 17:97]

May Allah take us by the hand and save us from the Hellfire. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

A Door to Love of Allah

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The souls have been predisposed to love whoever is good to them. Those people you love, you love them because of the beauty in their beings, physical or in terms of their character, and because they have done beautiful actions to you. If you realize that the beauty of whoever you love is from the beauty of the All Beautiful and every kindness is the shadow of the All Kind to us, then we realize our love should be purely for Him. Those who believe are more intense in love for Allah.

And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah. And if only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment. (165)
[Qur'an Al-Baqarah 2:165]

Gratitude for the blessings of Allah is the surest door to the love of Allah. Allah has a special reward for the grateful.

...If any do desire a reward in this life, We shall give it to him; and if any do desire a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give it to him. And swiftly shall We reward those that (serve us with) gratitude.
[Qur'an AleImran 3:145]

When don't be selfish and stingy with what we have. We should be means for others to grow and better themselves. When people do something for us, we should think much of it and pay back their favor with more than what they give. This is part of being grateful.

Gratitude of the slaves to Allah is to the body, heart, tongue and money. The body obeys Allah, the heart remembers Allah, the tongue praises Allah and the money is spent for the sake of Allah. This gratitude which we give to Allah is the means for our own benefit.

Allah Almighty says,

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "
(7) [Qur'an Al-Isra' 14:7]

Allah’s gratitude is far greater than us. We cannot outdo Allah. He is Ash-Shakur. If we do something, Allah gives more back. Our gratitude to Him is only drawing more from Him. Allah covers our small good with tremendous good.

May Allah make us His grateful servants. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Giving Without Motive

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Allah is the Bestower of every gift. He is the Provider of every benefit. He is Giver of what we need and what we enjoy. Whatever blessings you are enjoying is from Allah, Mighty and Majestic

And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (18)
[Qur'an An-Nahl 16:17]

The Qur'an invites us numerous times to contemplate on the blessings of Allah.

Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him]. (20)
[Qur'an Luqman 31:20]

When we see that everything is from Allah to us, we see that we don't give anything to Him and that is the beginning of sincerity in worship.

Allah is free of need. His gifts to us are not given for some ulterior motives. The Wahhab is not trying to get something in return from us with His gifts to us. But we, as people, are needy creatures. We do not give without something we want back, whether affection, love, praise, mentions in people's hearts, acquire nobility or power, or simply to free ourselves from being blamed of stinginess.

People who spend what they have--life, blood, sweat, energy, focus, money, for the sake of Allah, not because they want anything back in return, but only because they want Allah gain closeness with Allah and bliss of being with Allah in this life and the next, and all other pleasures dwindle in comparison.

May Allah grant us sincerity in worship and accepted works. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Slaves of Al-Hadi, Ar-Rashid

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Nothing really exist except for Allah, His Attributes and His Names. His slaves and His Kingdom are but His actions. Nothing He does is out of foolishness. Everything He does is correct.

Allah has no need for the righteousness of His slaves rather the slaves have a need to be righteous. He is not benefited by the worship of anyone but we have a need to worship Him.

Only Allah guides.

We should ask Allah until we develop a sense of right guidedness in everything.

... But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper. (31)
[Qur'an Al-Furqan 25:31]

So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon those who do not believe. (125)
[Qur'an Al-An'am 6:125]

Hamid ibn Abdurrahman said, "I heard Mu'awiya say in a khutba, 'I heard the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, "When Allah desires good for someone, He gives him correct understanding in the deen. I am an even-handed distributor, but it is Allah who gives. This community will remain straight following the command of its Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and will not be harmed by those who oppose it until the command of Allah comes."'"

The sign of the guided is that one becomes intelligent. He flees to Allah. No demand comes to him. No issue comes up to him. No problem is raised except he races to Allah for solution. He seeks His guidance towards what benefit and being pleased with what He has chosen for him.

The intelligent person when he wakes up, he thinks to himself, "I wonder what Allah is going to do with me today." But the heedless person when he wakes up, he thinks to himself, "I wonder what I am going to be doing today."

Such is the slave of Al-Hadi, Ar-Rasheed.

May Allah guide us, our families, our teachers, our leaders and the Ummah. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Front and Back

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

A moving speech by President Morsi a few days before he was ousted.

Courtesy of MesirKini

The Lord of the believers is Al-Muqaddim (the Expediter) and Al-Mu'akhkhir (the Delayer). He is the One who brings some people to the front and some to the back. He makes some things happen early in time and some things happen later in time. He puts some people forward to obedience and worship and He puts some back through His will.

Whoever knows that Allah puts people in the back does not feel safe with his state. You might feel good where you are right now but The Mu'akhkhir can easily put you to the back.

You turn to The Muqaddim and The Mu'akhkhir for protection and at the same time you don't feel despair in any of your states because the One who put you back can put you in front right now. You don't feel too remote for The Muqaddim to take you by the hand nor too far ahead for the Mu'akhkhir might not now hold you back.

As slaves of Allah, we take the steps to be put in front by following His guidance.

Allah Almighty says,

O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? (10) [It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know. (11) He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment. (12) And [you will obtain] another [favor] that you love - victory from Allah and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers. (13) O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant. (14)
[Qur'an As-Saff 61:10-14]

...And my success is not but through Allah. Upon him I have relied, and to Him I return. (88) [Qur'an Hud 11:88]

May Allah forgive our sins and have mercy on the Ummah. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in you du'as. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Iftar for the Godfearing

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The fast is there to inculcate taqwa (Godfearingness). Taqwa can only come about through obedience to Allah. Allah has set the legal limits of fast--i.e. from Fajr (dawn) to Maghrib (sunset). No more or no less. Therefore, one should be avid and enthusiastic to break one's fast. If we eat after Fajr, even if it is one minute after Fajr enters, there is no fasting for that day. If we delay iftar (breaking fast,) it will not legally invalidate the fast but morally it is not in keeping with the sunnah of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Like all other matters in our worship, we want to obey Allah as perfectly as we can. So, we start the fast when He commands us to start, and we stop the fast when He commands us to stop. In the starting there is obedience and in the stopping there is obedience to Allah. So what we are avid and enthusiastic about breaking fast is obeying Allah concerning the limits of the fast.

When we break our fasts with dates and water, we should be conscious of the significance of dates and water in the time of Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace. These two things were essentially what the Prophet, Allah and bless him and grant him peace, and his companions would eat normally. This is a great sunnah and a great secret for the fasting in the month of Ramadhan. So, we should not get into a habit of preparing a lavish meal.

The point behind fasting is turning away from the attachment of these appetites. So, what we eat for dinner or supper, this is optimally what we should take for iftar.

Don't prepare too much for iftar or put a lot of food on your plate, especially in community iftar where you find lavish meals and plenty of them. Don't succumb to your eyes and desires, lest you are bound to be wasteful.

..and waste not by extravagance. Verily, He likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance), (141)
[Qur'an Al-An'am 6:141]

We should be wary of over consumption of food. Our beloved Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, always encouraged us to only eat for need (as opposed to greed), advising us to only fill one third of our stomachs with food, while in the Qur'an Allah commands us to "eat and drink but do not be extravagant."

O Children of Adam! Look to your adornment at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but be not prodigal. He love not the prodigals. (31)
[Qur'an Al-A'raf 7:31]

1 in 8 people around the world suffer from extreme hunger. Extreme hunger alone kills more people annually than malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis combined, while just a few years ago, the food crisis led to outbreaks of violence in 25 countries around the world, resulting in hundreds of deaths. But it would be wrong to think that the cause of extreme hunger was a shortage in food. A report revealed that 50% of the food we produce around the world is wasted.

In short, there is enough food for everyone. It is just as our beloved Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
The food of one person suffices for two, the food of two people suffices for four people and the food of four people suffices for eight.
[Muslim]

Remember your apetite is shrinking in Ramadhan and a few morsels of food would suffice to keep you upright for taraweeh and other worship until suhr (dawn meal). For suhr suffice yourself with a light breakfast food so you don't become lazy during the day. Drink plenty of water (not juices and carbonated drinks) throughout the night.

I would like to share a video clip of iftar of a special community.  May Allah strengthen them and increase their ranks with Him. Perhaps this is the largest community iftar in history--an interview at Rabiatul Adawiyah, Cairo. InshaAllah we can gain some virtues from this.

source: Mesirkini

"We try our best to fulfill all requests, all volunteers have their respective jobs, there are volunteers to compile a list of the names after dhuhr prayer. The food is given to those far from Cairo first, then to those outside of Cairo. This is to reach those who are in most need first. But alhamdulillah there is enough food for everyone, a portion can feed two to three people."

"Some people are given rice, some pasta. All the food is the contribution of those who we do not know, we just set up this kitchen, and all the raw materials come from unknown sources. I am not in charge of cooking or distribution, I just do whatever I can."

"Everything is from Allah, people contribute and it is able to provide food for iftar, and we try our best to meet the demands. Everyone is helpful to each other, and no one has asked for more but they share food with those who do not get food, and there is no problem.”

Recall the story of Maryam alayhassalaam in the Qur'an,

So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zakariya. Every time Zakariya entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Maryam, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account." (37)
[Qur'an AleImran 3:37]

May Allah increase us in provision both spiritually and physically and make us muttaqin. Ameen.

Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower. (8) Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise." (9) [Qur'an AleImran 3:8-9]

Please don't forget us in your du'as. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Obtaining Perfect and Permanent Blessings

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Whatever blessings in this life is imperfect and temporary in nature but the blessings in the Hereafter is perfect and permanent.

The most important and major condition for obtaining the Divine blessings in the Hereafter is faith and belief, without which nobody can get them. And, in addition to belief, if one has taken full care of virtuous acts as well, then one will get the Divine blessings right from the beginning, otherwise one would detour to Hell for punishment of one's sins. This is the general rule, but if Allah wills, He may forgive all the sins of the greatest of the sinners, and give him the blessings of the Hereafter right from the beginning. Allah is not subject to any rule or code.

So, whatever thing has been given to you is an enjoyment of the worldly life. And that which is with Allah is much better, and much more durable for those who believe and place their trust in Allah, [36] and (for) those who abstain from the major sins and from shameless acts; and (for those who) when they get angry, they forgive, 1371 and those who have responded to their Lord (in submission to Him), and have established salah, and whose affairs are (settled) with consultation between them, and who spend out of what We have given to them, [38] and those who, when they are subjected to aggression, defend themselves. [39] And the recompense of evil is evil like it. Then the one who forgives and compromises has his reward undertaken by Allah. Surely, He does not like the unjust. 1401 And the one who defends himself after having been wronged, there is no blame on such people. [41] Blame, in fact, is upon those who wrong people and make mischief on earth unjustly. For such people there is a painful punishment. [42] And if one observes patience and forgives, it is, of course, one of the courageous conducts. [43]
[Qur'an Ash-Shura 42:36-43]

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." (201) [Qur'an Al-Baqarah 2:201]

Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Let's Repent

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
When a true believer falls in sin, a black dot appears on his heart. If, after that, he repents and seeks forgiveness from Allah, this dot disappears. If he does not repent, this dot keeps on increasing, so much so that it covers his whole heart.

In the Qur'an, the name given to this dot is 'rayn', as in كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ ﴿١٤ that is, their evil deeds have rusted their hearts. [Qur'an Al-Mutaffifin 83:14]

Heedlessness towards sins is the cause of one's permanent ruin.

Allah Almighty says,

If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise]. (31)
[Qur'an An-Nisa 4:31]

This verse tells us that there are two kinds of sins. Some of them are kabirah, that is, major sins; others are saghirah, (termed as Saiyyat, in this verse) that is, minor sins. He who musters enough courage and succeeds in staying away from major sins, has been given a promise by Allah Almighty that He will forgive his minor sins on His own.

The act of staying away from major sins also includes the act of fulfilling all obligations (fard and wajib) because neglecting or abandoning obligations is a major sin in itself. If one dutifully fulfills all obligations and succeeds in saving himself from all major sins, Allah Almighty will overlook his minor sins.

The sin known as 'saghirah' or, technically, a minor sin, is, in fact, no minor sin for that matter. To disobey Allah Almighty and to oppose His will is, invariably, a grave crime. Therefore, based on this view, a large number of scholars of the Muslim community have ruled that every disobedience of Allah and every opposition to His will is nothing but 'kabirah' or major sin. The distinction between 'kabirah' and 'saghirah', major and minor sins, is made only when these are compared to each other. It is in this sense that the blessed Companion, Sayyidina 'Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas has been reported to have said: 'Any act forbidden by the Shari'ah is a major sin.'

In short, a sin which is technically known as minor does not mean that people should go about indulging in it neglectfully, indolently or just ignore it as something ordinary. On the contrary, the fact is that a minor sin, if done with nerve or heedlessness, does not remain minor anymore - it becomes a major sin. A good example of a major and a minor sin, as given by some sage, is that of a small scorpion and a big scorpion, or that of a large ember and a tiny spark, for man cannot bear the pain' given by any of these.

Therefore, Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi said that the greatest act of worship offered for Allah is to give up sins. The 'ibadah or worship by people, who offer prayers and remember Allah, yet do not give up sins, is not accepted. The famous mystic, Fudayl ibn 'Ayad said: 'The lighter you take a sin to be, the greater it will become with Allah as a crime.' The most righteous elders of the Muslim community used to say: Every sin is a courier of kufr which invites people to manners and morals typical of disbelievers.

According to the Musnad of Ahmad, the mother of believers Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), wrote a letter to Sayyidna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which she said that a servant of Allah who disobeys Allah Almighty finds his fans become fault-finders, and friends turn into enemies.

Among the major sins are:

shirk (ascribing partners to Allah)
lying about Allah and His Messenger
not performing prayers in its time
withholding/not paying zakat
not fasting in Ramadhan without excuse
not performing hajj while able to do so
unjust killing
committing murder
committing oppression
being overbearing or taking advantage of the weak, slaves, wives or animals
breaching of trusts
committing injustice
judging unjustly
harming and abusing Muslims and others
harming the Friends of Allah
abusing or reviling any one of the Companions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace.
deceiving and plotting evil
rebellion & charging of unbelief
spreading harmful tales
wrongdoing, deception or oppression on the part of the ruler
pointing a weapon at a Muslim
spying and eavesdropping on other's private conversation
engaging in bribery
dealing in fraud
dealing in riba (usury/interest) - taking, giving, scribing, etc.
arguing or quarrelling for show & not seeking the truth
disobeying and disrespect to parents
cutting off the ties of relationships
committing adultery or fornication
committing sodomy
not fulfilling one's promises
cursing others
showing off – Ostentations
pride and arrogance
trailing one's garment in pride - i.e. below the ankles out of pride
ungratefulness
stealing
being a perpetual liar
backbiting
drinking alcoholic beverages
gambling
devouring orphan's wealth
consuming forbidden wealth or taking it by any means. Such as manipulation one's inheritance.
committing highway robbery
making false oath
slandering innocent women
women appearing like men and vice-versa
acquiring knowledge only for worldly gain or concealing knowledge
eating carrion, blood or pork meat
reminding people of one's kindness
committing suicide
not keeping clean from the remains of urine
believing in what soothsayers & astrologers
men wearing silk & gold
despairing from Allah's Help or forgiveness
disbelieving fate/destiny

... and hundreds more

Someone said before Sayyidina Ibn 'Abbas that the number of major sins was seven. He said: 'Not seven. Say seven hundred, which is better.' In his book Al-Zawajir, Imam Ibn Hajr al-Makki has given a list of all such sins with their full explanations, sins which are included under Kaba'ir. The number of major sins listed in his book reaches up to four hundred and sixty seven.

Major sins are forgiven by tawbah (repentance) only. We should hasten to repent from our sins. Delaying repentance is in and of itself a sin for which repentance is required.

Allah Most High says:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّـهِ تَوْبَةً نَّصُوحًا

"O you who believe! Turn to Allah in sincere repentance..."
[Qu'ran At-Tahrim 66:8]

Repentance is something more than seeking forgiveness. Because this is a serious matter, there are conditions attached to it.

1. Leaving the sin immediately
2. Regretting or being remorseful for having committed the sin
3. Resolving not to return to the sin.
4. Making amends to those you have wronged. If it relates to the rights of another person, then one return the right or property one wrongly took.

You should give up the sin for the sake of Allah alone, and not for any other reason such inability to do it or repeat it, or fear of what people think or say. If you are sincere in your repentance to Allah, then expect your sin to be forgiven.

Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people. [Qur'an Aleimran 3:147]

Please don't forget us and the ummah in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

Developing a Good Habit of Reciitng Qur'an Daily

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

This is the month we should be reciting a lot of Qur'an ourselves, not just suffice ourselves with listening to the imam reciting Qur'an during taraweeh prayer. If you are not in the habit of reciting the Qur'an daily, this is the chance to develop that habit. It should be easier because we have one less enemy to contend with--the shaytan. If your intention is sincere, you will reap the benefits of reciting the Speech of Allah and it will become part of your life, inshaAllah.

"Surely, those who recite the Book of God, and establish Prayer, and spend, secretly and openly, from that which He has bestowed on them, they look forward to imperishable gain, so that He will fully recompense them their wages and increase them of His grace. Indeed, He is All-Forgiving, All-Thankful." [Qur'an Faatir 35:29-30]

"The likeness of a believer who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citron: its scent is fragrant and its taste delicious. The likeness of a believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of a date: it has no fragrance and its taste is delicious. The likeness of a hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is a like a water lily: its scent is fragrant and its taste is bitter. And a likeness of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like a bitter colocynth: it is scentless and its taste is bitter. (Bukhari)

The Righteous Forbears had different habits regarding the time in which they would finish the Qur'an. Some of them would finish the Qur'an once every 2 months or every month; once every ten nights or every eight; most of them every 7 night; some every 6 nights, every 5 or every 4; many every 3 nights; some every 2 days, every day and night, twice every day and night, twice each day, and 8 times each day (4 by night and 4 by day). Those who complete the recitation of the Qur'an every day include Uthman ibn Affan, al-Shafi', Mujahid, Sa'id ibn Jubayr and Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be very pleased with them all).

It is recommended to read at least a juz or two a day. So, try to work up to it this month and aspire to do more. If you read 4 pages after each obligatory prayer, you would finish a juz daily. If you prefer to do it in one sitting, one of the best times is after taraweeh prayer before you go to sleep.

May Allah give you tawfiq. And success is from Allah alone.

And Allah knows best.

Preparing for The Merciful's Gaze Tonight

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

We wish you and your loved ones Ramadhan Kareem. Kullu 'am wa antum bi khair. Please forgive me and my family for all our shortcomings.

May Allah increase and accept our worship and bring us closer to Him. Ameen. Please include us in your du'as. Jazakum Allahu khairan.

In preparation for the first night of Ramadhan, I would like to share with you an address by Shaykh Abdul Karim Yahya,

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
Praise is for Allah, Lord of the Worlds
May Allah bless and grant peace to our liegelord Muhammad as well as his folk and companions

Dear brothers and sisters from the nation of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),

As we wait in eager anticipation of the noble guest who approaches, the blessed month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed, we undoubtedly are making physical and spiritual preparations therefore.

Among the preparations that the scholars of Islam have encouraged is preparing our hearts for Allah's gaze. Baihaqi relates, “When it is the first night of the month of Ramadan, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, gazes to them and the one to whom Allah looks, He does not punish him, ever.” The place to which Allah looks is the heart. So what will Allah see in your and my heart if He were to look to us on the first night of Ramadan?

One of the qualities that would prevent us from this blessed gaze (and from many other opportunities for forgiveness) is malice. The Prophet, May Allah bless him and grant him peace, taught us of the Night of Power and the Half Night of Sha’ban that those who harbor rancor, mistreat parents, severe bonds of kinship or drink are prevented from Allah’s merciful gaze. Do we want Allah to look to His servants on the first night of Ramadan and overlook us because we are bearing ill will against each other? Is whatever anyone has done to hurt us so important that we can not overlook it in exchange for an opportunity for eternal salvation from Allah's punishment? What about all of those whom we have wronged? Do we not need Allah's pardon as well as theirs?

We can purify our hearts in preparation for this gaze from our Merciful, Forgiving Lord and also expose ourselves to an opportunity for His pardon when we need it most, by pardoning His servants. Allah said, "The one who pardons and reconciles his reward is upon Allah;" Quran (42:40). Tabarani relates that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A caller will call [on the Day of Rising], ‘Let him stand whose reward is upon Allah and let him enter paradise’ Then he will call a second time, ‘Let him stand whose reward is upon Allah and let him enter paradise’ It will be said, ‘Who is the one whose reward is upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic?’ He will say, ‘Those who pardon people.’ Then he will call a third time, ‘Let him stand whose reward is upon Allah and let him enter paradise.’ Then so and so many thousand will stand and enter paradise without reckoning." Imagine being among that fortunate group and having all of our many sins forgiven and receiving our reward directly from Allah!

In preparation for the blessed first night of Ramadan, Insha'Allah, and that day in which each of us will meet Allah, let us pardon one another and all of Allah's servants. I will begin with my own sinful self. O Allah, if any of Your slaves have transgressed the rights You have prescribed to me, they are excused. I ask you to grant them and me Paradise, and that You make us among its dwellers whom You have described in Your saying, "We have removed what was in their breasts of rancor, brethren on couches facing one another;" Quran (15:47). I also ask anyone who I have wronged to seek their due from me and to forgive me.

“Our Lord forgives us and our brethren who preceded us in faith and do not place in our hearts ill will towards those who believe. Our Lord, indeed you are compassionate and merciful.” Quran (59:10)

And Allah alone grants tawfiq (success),
Abdul-Kareem Yahyaa

Allah is the Possessor of every might and every majesty. Allah's power and His strength surround everything. No one can outdo Him. No one escapes His grasp. He is the One who overcomes everything with whatever He wills.

We see this overcoming of Allah in Surah Yusuf. The brothers of Yusuf wanted to kill him, the owners of the slave caravan wanted him as a slave, the aziz (governor) who bought him wanted him as his helper, the aziz's wife wanted him as her lover, and so on. Everyone tried to make what they want in Yusuf's being to happen. But Allah foiled whatever they wanted, and all that happened was whatever He wanted.

Allah is the Ghaalib. Everyone reaches out for a matter but Allah always gets to it first and whatever He wants happen despite we might think is happening.

And Allah is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know. (21)
[Qur'an Yusuf 12:21]

It looks like Yusuf's brothers, the slave caravan, the aziz, the aziz's wife, Yusuf's jail's companions and others are getting what they want, but at the end of the day all that happen is what Allah has wanted. All of these people were but playing a role so that they can take Yusuf to the destiny that Allah has chosen for him. All we see is Allah won and everyone lost.

There is no real benefit nor harm except from Allah. He is the conqueror. He is the majesty. He is the dominion. He is the judgment. He chooses. He creates. All that happen is whatever He has chosen to happen.

If we realize Allah's Rahmah and Lutf, we don't worry about other people, we don't take other people personally, and we realize all that is happening to us is the Will of Allah. We are not scared of what's happening but we turn to Allah and see His hands in every matter. We realize that we do not outdo Him. We are not capable but we are incapable. We are not strong but we are weak. We are not invincible but we are overcome. When we realize that about ourselves, we become humbled before Him. We see Him in events and become humble within ourselves.

The one who knows that Allah is Almighty, the One who is unique, venerates His commands through hearing and obeying. The one who knows Allah has complete Majesty, he is grateful when he is denied, patient when he is tried and finds humiliation from His destining delightful and being denied sweet. This is because hearts are inclined to bear difficulties from the AlMighty.

... Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." (286) [Qur'an 2:286]

Who Will Avenge the Criminals?

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Allah will take care of the bad guys. We don't have a need to get back at people. Don't forget that the Lord of the Muslims is Al-Muntaqim (The Lord of Retribution, The Avenger), Al Aziz (The Mighty), Al Jabbar (The Compeller). The time will come when Allah will avenge the criminals and when that time comes, no one can escape His vengeance. When we realize this we don't become distress but rather we feel a trust. We realize that His matter will come when He wills.

They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him. (67) And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on. (68) And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord, and the record [of deeds] will be placed, and the prophets and the witnesses will be brought, and it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged. (69) And every soul will be fully compensated [for] what it did; and He is most knowing of what they do. (70)
[Qur'an Az-Zumar 39:67-70]

May Allah guide the Ummah and give victory to the believers. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

To Forgive and To Love

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Why did Allah talk about Hell a lot in the Qur'an? For example:

Allah Almighty says:

...Indeed Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together.
[Qur'an An-Nisa 4:140]

Allah Almighty says,

Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait (21) For the transgressors, a place of return, (22) In which they will remain for ages [unending]. (23) They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink (24) Except scalding water and [foul] purulence - (25) An appropriate recompense. (26) Indeed, they were not expecting an account (27) And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial. (28) But all things We have enumerated in writing. (29) "So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment." (30)
[Qur'an Naba’ 78:21-30].

When Allah tells us about Hell, it is for us to come back to Him again and again and again...until we meet Him. He creates within us the thing that make us come back, that is fear. Those who fear going to Hell, they will come back to Him, and then He accepts them.

Allah facilitates our coming back. He sends apprises. He might send to His servants outwardly unpleasant things but the fruits can be very pleasant.

If somebody is off the mark and Allah loves this person He might give him a few problems. If he realizes his mistakes, he comes back to Allah.

We should turn to Allah and ask for His forgiveness often. We also should forgive and pardon those who have wronged us. Don't forget, nobody is perfect. People make mistakes. Those who hope for Allah's mercy, they are merciful to His creatures.

Allah Almighty says,

Is the reward for good [anything] but good? (60) So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? (61)
[Qur'an Ar-Rahman 55:61-62]

When we learn the Names of Allah such as At-Tawwab, Al-Ghaffar (the Forgiver), Al-Ghaffur (the Forgiving), Al-Affuw (the Pardoner), Al-Latif (the Gentle, the Knower of Subtleties), Ar-Rahim (the One who shows mercy), Ar-Rahman (the One full of Mercy), Al-Wadud (the Loving One), Al-Halim (the Forbearing), they teach us love and forgiveness.

The person who understands the meanings of these beautiful Names will not find it difficult to forgive people and to love his fellow Muslims for the sake of Allah. Whatever is for Allah is connected and whatever is not for Allah is disconnected.

The turmoil we see everywhere in the Muslim world is nothing more than because the people are disconnected from Allah and distant from the religion. But for those who guard the limits of Allah, Allah will protect them and their religion.

May Allah guide the Ummah and protect our Faith. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.

With Pain and Disappointment

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

To the people of Egypt, our hearts cry and our eyes tear. La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

No doubt we feel pain, we feel disappointed but the important thing is to not be bitter. Learn to let go and recognize that every day won’t be sunny. And when you find yourself lost in the darkness of despair, remember that it is only in the black of night that you see the stars, and those stars lead you home.

And remember what Allah Almighty says,

Alif, Lam, Meem (1) Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried? (2) But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars. (3) Or do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun Us? Evil is what they judge. (4) Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allah - indeed, the term decreed by Allah is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (5) And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds. (6)
[Qur'an Al-Ankabut 29:1-6]

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners. (30)
[Qur'an Al-Anfal 8:30]

And the disbelievers planned, but Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners. (54)
[Qur'an AleImran 3:54]

And those before them had plotted, but to Allah belongs the plan entirely. He knows what every soul earns, and the disbelievers will know for whom is the final home. (42)
[Qur'an Al-Ra'd 13:42]

Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs." (173)
[Qur'an AleImran 3:173]

O All Merciful, protect the innocent people and bring peace to this blessed land of the Prophets. Ameen.

Please keep us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.
