Something To Do, Something To Love, Something To Hope For

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

Life and death are two things that cannot be separated in creation.

Yet, many don't want to think about death or talk about death. Some try to keep death away from children perpetuating the vicious cycle of denial of the most certain thing in life. Then every time they hear so-and-so died, they are shocked, as if they had no idea that it would ever come.

We cannot sit death quietly in the corner, pretending that it can't see us and we can't see it.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: Remember the terminator of all pleasures i.e. death. [Tirmidhi]

Once, the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wassallam, came to the Masjid for prayer, when he noticed some people laughing and giggling. He remarked, "If you remembered death, I would not see you like this. Think of your death often."

Death is not a morbid word, neither talking about death will kill you. Talking about death helps keep the awareness of the real life of the Hereafter and sparks enthusiasm to prepare for it by avoiding disobedience of Allah, the One who gives life and takes life, and by doing righteous deeds.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: The most intelligent person is the one who remembers death often.

Every day is not precious to you when you are fantasizing that you have been guaranteed a life that will never end or at least won’t end till you are 100.

Death is the only reality that is guaranteed in life, and nothing else is. Whatever we love, seek, or get attached to will perish. Our jobs will go, our friends will go, our family will go, our ego will go, our dreams will go, our goals will go. When death comes calling, it will just come, no matter how “absurd,” “rare,” or “unusual” it may be.

Allah Almighty says,

Everyone upon the earth will perish, (26) And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor. (27)
[Quran, Ar-Rahman 55:26-27]

Everything we do without seeking the pleasure of Allah will just go, but that which is seeking His pleasure and His Grace, will endure. Death, loss, heartbreak, and detachment are no longer that painful anymore, because at the end of the day your expectations boil down to nothing.

So, whatever you get, whatever you have, see it as a gift from Allah. Every second with a loved one, even with your cat, is precious, because you know that it is a gift. Every second of fun and pleasure is great, because you know that it is a gift. Therefore, you remember to thank Allah. Every time it hurts, you know that that’s going to go away as well. So you bear with it patiently.

Your focus is Allah, Master of the Universe, not how many likes you get on Facebook, who likes your selfies, who gave you a compliment, etc. Life seems much more than these petty issues. You learn to forgive people who hurt you, cherish those who love you, and get over your ego, because what use is an ego for one when his wealth is reduced to a single shroud and his body is going to be worm buffet six feet under the ground sooner than he thinks?

Allah Almighty says,

..fear Allah that you may be successful. (130) And fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers. (131) And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy. (132) And race with one another towards Forgiveness from your Lord and towards a paradise the width of which spans the heavens and the earth, prepared for the God-fearing, (133
[Qur'an, AleImran 3:131-133]

As someone said, human beings need 3 things to be happy...something to do, something to love, something to hope for.

Something to do — race towards forgiveness and Paradise

Something to love — forgiveness and mercy from your Lord

Something to hope for — Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth.

Paradise is not an ordinary commodity; the entire heavens and the earth are its price. With such an object of unimaginable worth and magnitude, what else should you do but hasten to it?

May Allah enable us to hasten to do good deeds, forgive all our sins and grant us the highest Paradise. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
