Loving the Sunnah: Patience and Don't Be Angry

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

We know that there have been such and such articles, films, videos, cartoons floating around depicting our Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) in an insulting manner. It shouldn't strike our curiosity to watch them, read them, look at them or viral them to everybody. If you do any of these things you are just wasting your time. And you have fallen right into shaytan's tricks.

Remember, Shaytan is always lurking to throw things out there for us to trip on. If we then react in an emotional manner and engage in senseless violence, then we have fallen. Is this what the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) struggled for 23 years to bring to us?

We should realize that those hateful speech, films, videos, cartoons and articles are futile wasteful attempts to try to undermine the message of Islam and to try to misrepresent Islam. It is nothing new. If we react in senseless violence, we have aided them to misrepresent Islam.

The Qur'an has plenty of reports about how prophets were insulted, ridiculed and rejected in the most obscene way. There is no need to go to these current events. Just read the Qur'an.

For example, Prophet Nuh alayhissalaam complained about his people who find him disgusting and they plug their ears with their fingers and covered themselves with their clothes as a show of insult to him.

And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance. (7)
[Qur'an, Nuh 71:7]

The Qur'an recorded hurtful words towards the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) has to recite them -- how the disbelievers rejected him in the most obscene way, the pain that he felt when people made fun of him.

So many accusations were thrown at the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) and Allah recorded them in the Qur'an. This is because Allah wants us to remember that all Prophets, though they are the most noble of Allah's creation and that Allah has honored them, at the same time they have faced the worst kind of insults, and they will continue to be ridiculed and insulted.

Malicious attitudes and hateful looks angrily pursued the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace).

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad." (51)
[Qur'an, Al-Qalam 68:51]

Their poisonous, feverish looks were accompanied by abusive cursing, insulting, and mocking. They reacted with insolent pride and opposition; confused and wavering, they swayed in their denial of the Message from one pretext to another.

But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]." (5)
[Qur'an, Al-Anbiya' 21:5]

They called the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) “A magician and a liar!”

And they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, "This is a magician and a liar. (4) Has he made the gods [only] one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing." (5)
[Qur'an, Sad 38:4-5]

They called the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace), “A mad poet!”

Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant (35) And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" (36) Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers. (37) Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment, (38) And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do - (39)
[Qur'an, As-Saffat 37:39]

They called the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace), “A madman!”

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter. (5) And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad. (6) Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?" (7)
[Qur'an, Al-Hijr 15:5-7]

They called the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace), “A soothsayer!”

So Allah conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire. (27) Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful." (28) So remind [O Muhammad], for you are not, by the favor of your Lord, a soothsayer or a madman. (29) Or do they say [of you], "A poet for whom we await a misfortune of time?" (30) Say, "Wait, for indeed I am, with you, among the waiters." (31)
[Qur'an, At-Tur 52:27-31]

But the policy of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) is to remain patient.

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance. (10)
[Qur'an, Al-Muzzammil 73:10]

Obviously, the Companions were with the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) to hear all these insults but they did not go out and protest, yelling and screaming or engage in senseless violence. If anybody who should be angry, it would be the Companions because they were of the best generation of the Prophet's Ummah. Their faith and love for the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) can't even compare to ours. And how come they didn't get angry and overwhelmed with rage? Because, they understood the Qur'an -- Qur'an didn't just come to give that love for the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) but also to guide that love, and teach them how to respond with those kinds of insults.

Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe. (96)
[Qur'an, Al-Mu'minun 23:96]

There is no where in the Qu'ran that justify our anger and overwhelming rage.

Actually, we should feel sorry for those people.

They can't hurt the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace). They can't take away his honor given by Allah. No article, no cartoon, no film, no hate speech, no form of art can take away the dignity of our Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace).

If you are angry, just think of how bullies work. The more you react in an immature way, the more you are encouraging others to pursue more hateful speech towards our Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace).

The Muslims make those things popular -- we are the ones who give it more claim by watching, reading, talking, viral it to everybody. So, don't pay attention to them and delete them from your archives. Focus on the positives.

Respond in mature civil and higher discourse -- the way of the Qur'an and Sunnah taught us. Turn that rage into something positive.

Allah has prepared us for all that.

You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination. (186)
[Qur'an, AleImran 3:186]

May Allah grant us patience and taqwa and guide us and the Ummah. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam

Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
