Believers Don't Despair

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

In a hadith, the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "The hardships faced by the prophets are the hardest faced by men, after that, by those closer to them."

Allah Most High says,

Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allah?" Unquestionably, the help of Allah is near. (214) [Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:214]

The verse recounts the enormous amount of suffering faced by past prophets and believers at the hands of hostile disbelievers. Muslims should be patient against the hostility of disbelievers and trials of life as ideal happiness can only be achieved by getting ready and working hard for the Hereafter.

Hardship and suffering have different levels. The lowest degree is to resist against one's own desiring self and the shaytan, or to strengthen the bases of one's beliefs by countering the forces working against the true Faith. This degree of achievement is within the grasp of every Muslim. Further on, there are the middle and the higher levels. The degree of one's strenuous effort shall be the degree of one's entry in to Paradise. Thus, nobody remains untried by effort and struggle and the resulting hardship and suffering.

Believers don't despair.

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. (5) Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. (6) So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. (7) And to your Lord direct [your] longing. (8) [Qur'an, Ash-Sharh 94:7]

Allah Most High reminded us in the Qur'an,

[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals. (110) There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe. (111) [Qur'an, Yusuf 12:110-111]

Prophet Ya'qub (peace be upon him) spent many years turning to Allah in pain, sorrow and anguish over his lost son, Yusuf (peace be upon him). His extreme sorrow eventually made him blind. Allah finally returned his beloved son to him and cured his blindness.

At no point did Prophet Ya’qub stop making du'a or lose hope in Allah’s ability to return his son to him. In fact, he instructed his other sons:

O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people." (87) [Qur'an, Yusuf 12:87]

Those who survive the tests through patience, perseverance and rushing to good deeds are the successful ones.

May Allah grant us patience and save us from the trials and tribulations of this life and the next and grant relief to those who are facing hardships and ease their sufferings.

...Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." [Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:286]

Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and is Most Wise, and He alone grants success, and to Him is the final return of all.

Wassalaam
