You Win When You Struggle

Bismillah

An elderly person who is suffering from cancer asked me to teach him to recite the Quran. But he has reservations that he could learn because he had tried learning from a Quran teacher before and failed ....He said, "I cannot bear the embarrassment any longer that I told him that I am quitting. You know after reciting about first 10 verses of Baqarah thrice with ustaz help I still cannot recite it on my own with ease. I will still struggling to spell and pronounce the word. See what I mean. So bad."

Learning, teaching, reading the Quran are of the best of good deeds, and when it is done for Allah, it is worship.

No amount of good deeds or worship guarantees you what you want. The first sign of faith is content with whatever Allah gives.

You make du'a not because you want it (the thing you are asking for) but because Allah loves to be asked because Allah loves to give. Allah will teach you patience along the way. When you start demanding from Allah then you start to see yourself as equal to Allah.

Anybody who can recite with ease after reciting 10 verses 3 times is from the bounty of Allah but there is no reason to be embarrased when you are not reciting well. Give it time. For some people it may take months to read surah al Fatiha alone correctly. Syrian teachers will not let you pass al Fatiha until it is read correctly -- e.g one of my teachers had to come back to his Shaykh 18 times for al Fatiha alone and both of them are Syrian Arabs. That's how serious they are with Quran. Because Quran is the words of Allah and it is paramount.

Frustration is part of learning but if you want something as great as Quran, you have to struggle more. The hadith said the one who struggle in reciting while learning Quran gets double reward for each letter.

Allah knows best.
