Where Are The Chivalrous Men?

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

What's worse than seeing a man and a woman hugging and/or kissing in public? In the West this is a pretty normal sight. And we are disgusted by it and we don't want our children to see it. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. And that's why some parents (Muslims and non-Muslims alike) won't put their kids in public schools--they don't want the bad influence.

I sent my children to public schools but I made a point to be involved in their schools and classrooms. I volunteered in their classrooms, chaperoned school field trips, etc, and I saw the universal good manners taught and applied--follow the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you." Boys are taught chivalry--boys help girls, and boys don't pick on girls. So the public schools are not really the culprit in the deteriorating morals of our youth.

In Islam, we know good character weighs heavy on the Scale in the Day of Judgement, and we know that the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, was sent to perfect noble character traits, and as Muslims we should strive to follow the Prophet's perfect character. And we know as well what the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

"None of you [truly] believes until he loves for his brother that which he loves for himself."

But what did I see today, not in the West? Half of a bus were young men in traditional Islamic clothing and the other half were young women in traditional Islamic clothing. I saw those young men sat on soft seats but those young women stood on the aisle holding fast to the straps above them so they don't fall over when the bus move or brake suddenly. What is wrong with this picture? Aren't men protectors of women? Aren't there no chivalrous men among these men? Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.

ٱلرِّجَالُ قَوَّٰمُونَ عَلَى ٱلنِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّـهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ وَبِمَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means...Qur'an An-Nisa 4:34)
