Be Patient

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Ramadhan was here a little while ago. It was our training ground to learn patience. If we fasted correctly in Ramadhan, then we would have benefited from one of the effects of Ramadhan--an increase in patience.

If we are consistent with the sunnah fasts (like Mondays, Thursdays, 3 white days (13th, 14th, 15th of each lunar month), Day of Arafah, 6 days Shawwal fasting, etc.), we will benefit from this on going training.

You can never have too much patience. Lack of patience can cause lots of problems--to yourself as well as to others. Patience is an acquired trait which many people don't have or many lose it very easily. If you have patience, nothing befalls you will disturb you. You will go through challenges, difficulties, uneasiness and discomfort in stride. The pious and the righteous people are not free from trials and tribulations of this life, but they are the happiest people because they have patience and restraint.

Patience is not just about avoiding sins but it also relates to performing good deeds. Patience is one of the things that you simply just do it. Patience is not easy. You can't just say I am going to be patient and you are patient. You have to teach yourself to be patient. You have to struggle with it and force yourself to be patient-- in worship, in seeking knowledge, in your relationships, in tribulations, in taking care of your elderly parents, etc. Because patience is so difficult, the reward for patience is nothing but Paradise. And Allah is with the patient.

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. (153) [Quran, Al-Baqarah 2:153]

One of the things that happened in our privileged lives is that we tend to think life is just there to enjoy and just do what we want to do because things are so easy for us and we have so much freedom and flexibility. We tend to forget that a good percentage of the people that walk on the face of this earth do not have the freedom or the flexibility and they struggled a good portion of their lives. We sometimes become deluded that most people are just like us who can do what we want to do. When you feel like going out, you just hop in your car. When you feel like going on a vacation somewhere, you just book an airline ticket. When you feel like eating something, you just buy or make it. We have to stop and remind ourselves that most people don't have such luxury. So we avoid being ungrateful in times of ease and impatient in times of difficulties.

May Allah make us His grateful slaves and grant us beautiful patience. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and is Most Wise, and He alone grants success, and to Him is the final return of all.

Wassalaam
