Assalaamu alaykum
The story of the youth of the cave signifies love of the best kind. They came together, committed to such love by seeking to earn the pleasure of the beloved, Allah Most High, before taking pleasure in His creations. [Surah Al-Kahf, Chapter 18]
Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder? (9) [Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance." (10)[Qur'an, Al-Kahf 18: 9-10]
It is We who relate to you, [O Muhammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. (13) [Qur'an, Al-Kahf 18: 13]
One of bases of love is acquaintance and understanding. A person does not love another person who he is not acquainted. When it is strong and firm, then is deep love. One of the causes of love is secret connection between a lover and his beloved. This love is cemented not for beauty but for the union of their souls.
Love begets among persons of similar nature and habits. Remember the proverb, "birds of a feather flock together"? The souls which agree with one another love one another, and those souls which have no agreement differ.
Only Allah should be the object of our love. The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) is an object of love because he (Allah bless him and grant him peace) is the beloved of Allah. So is love for the learned, religious and good people, as the dear ones of the beloved are object of love. The ambassadors and the messengers of the dear ones are also objects of love.
There is no object of love other than our Creator. The way to love Allah is through Divine knowledge. A man gets great pleasure getting the secret information of an emperor. Allah is the Most High and Most Honorable. So, the pleasure gained by the pursuit of knowledge of His attributes is the greatest. The best and highest pleasure is by the pursuit of knowledge relating to Allah and His attributes. It is many times more than the pleasure gained by satisfaction of lust or greed by the sense organs.
Strive to choose righteous friends who are preoccupied with seeking knowledge and are of a good nature, who can help you in achieving your aim, add to the benefits you have already gained, encourage you to seek more knowledge and stop you from feeling bored and tired; friends who are religiously-committed, trustworthy and of good character, who are sincere towards Allah and who are not merely messing around.
Beware of the bad companion, for he may influence you and people are like birds, they will resemble one another [i.e., “birds of a feather flock together”]. So beware of mixing with people like that, for that is a sickness, and prevention is better than cure.
May Allah grant us righteous and knowledgeable companions. May Allah increase us in knowledge and make Him our only love. Ameen.
Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.
And Allah knows best and is Most Wise, and He alone grants success, and to Him is the final return of all.
