Healing Hearts -- Du'a of Umm Salamah (R.A.)

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Allah, Exalted is He, says,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, (155) Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." (156) Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided. (157)

[Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:155-157]

When we are afflicted with trials and hardships--loss of loved one, sickness, loss of wealth or job, etc, or simply do not get something we anticipated or hoped for, then the story of the mother of the believers, Umm Salamah (radiAllahu anha), brings much comfort to the heart. It encourages us to build up our own strength and increase our trust in Allah, for surely He is the Best of Planners and Providers.

Du'a of Umm Salamah

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) saying, “When a person suffers from a calamity and utters:

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji`un. Allahumma ujurni fi musibati, wakhluf li khairan minha

(To Allah we belong and to Him is our return. O Allah, reward me for my affliction and replace it for me with that which is better), then Allah surely compensates him with reward and better substitute." Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) died, I repeated the same supplication as the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) had commanded me (to do). So Allah bestowed upon me a better substitute than him (I was married to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam).[Muslim].

May Allah rain down His mercy upon us, our families and our loved ones, and save us from the trials and tribulations of this life and the next, and relieve the suffering around the world. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and He alone grants success.

Wassalaam
