Signs of Possessing Good Character

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

When asked about the best of the believers, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam replied, “They are those who have the best character and manners.” [At-Tirmidhee, Abu Daawood]

In fact, the Qur’an uses the comprehensive Arabic word Birr to refer to faith. Allah Almighty says,

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. (177)
[Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:177]

The word Birr is a rather comprehensive term which includes all forms of righteousness, in word and deed. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam points to good character being the greatest characteristic of Birr.

"Righteousness is in good character, and wrongdoing is that which wavers in your soul, and which you dislike people finding out about." [Muslim]

Birr is what encourages people to perform righteous actions, and is associated with Al-Abraar - righteous, pious people who are obedient to Allah Most High.

Birr encompasses many characteristics: justice in one’s dealings, kindness, consideration in one’s endeavors, being generous in offering help, as well as other traits of the believers whom Allah Most High has described by saying:

Certainly will the believers have succeeded: (1) They who are during their prayer humbly submissive (2) And they who turn away from ill speech (3) And they who are observant of zakah (4) And they who guard their private parts (5) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - (6) But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors - (7) And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive (8) And they who carefully maintain their prayers - (9) Those are the inheritors (10)
[Qur'an, Al-Mu'minun 23:1-10]

Whoever is unsure of his condition, he should measure these characteristics within himself; if he finds in himself these good qualities, then this is a sign of possessing good character. If he finds that he does not possess any of these characteristics, this is a sign of bad character. If he finds only some of them, then he should strive to retain what he possesses and to obtain what he does not.

May Allah grant us righteousness and noble character, and increase us in taqwa. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and He alone grants success.

Wassalaam
