Etiquette During Sickness

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

A person who is afflicted with an illness should realize that this is a tremendous opportunity to draw close to Allah. Be grateful for that and make the most out of his down time by using one's time in remembrance of Allah. He should face the tribulation with a beautiful patience. This is by not complaining to visitors, missing prayers or having despair. It is permissible to make statements such as, “I have a big pain,” if said without complaining; it is preferred to say “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is to Allah) before saying that.

1- Prayers/Supplications

We should always turn to Allah with prayers, both in times of blessings and afflictions. Allah gives us the example of Prophet Ayub (Job) in his trial:

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful." (83) So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshipers [of Allah]. (84)
[Qur'an, Al-Anbiya' 21:83-84]

The following supplication illustrates the state he should be in: “There is no god but Allah, alone, He has no partner; His is the dominion; His is the praise; He gives life and death: He is the living who does not ever die: truly exalted above deficiency is Allah, the Lord of the slaves and the lands. Abundant, pure and blessed praise be to Allah for every circumstance. Allah is the most tremendous: Allah’s majesty, haughtiness and power are over every place. O Allah if you have destined death for me then forgive me, have mercy on me, take me out of my sins, and grant me residence in the Garden of Eden.”

He may recite the Prophetic “get well wishes”:

La ba'sa tahoorun inshaa-Allah.

[No need to worry. It (this sickness) is a means of cleansing from sins.]

Followed by the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) supplication for the sick:

Allahuma rabbi-nas adhhib al ba'sa, ishfi wa anta shaafi, la shifa' illa shifa'uka shifa' la yughadiru saqama.

[Oh Allah! The Sustainer of Mankind! Remove the illness, cure the disease. You are the One Who cures. There is no cure except Your cure. Grant us a cure that leaves no illness. (Recommended to touch the area of pain with the right hand while reciting this supplication.)]

'As'alu Allah al 'azim rabbil 'arshil azim an yashifii.

[I ask Allah, the Mighty, the Lord of the Mighty Throne, to cure me.] (Recommended to repeat seven times.}

Rabbana 'atinaa fid dunyaa hasanah wafil aakhirati hasanah wa qinaa azaaban naar.

Oh Allah! Our Lord and Sustainer! Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the Fire of Jahannam (Hell)

A'udhu bi'izzatillaahi wa qudratihi min sharri maa ajidu wa uhaaziru.

I seek protection in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I am experiencing and of what I fear. (Recommended for the sick person to place right hand on area of pain, say Bismillah three times, then recite this supplication seven times.

2- Sincere Repentance and Seeking Allah's Forgiveness

Repentance

The sick person should repent sincerely from the sins he committed before his sickness. Repentance is something more than seeking forgiveness. Because this is a serious matter, there are conditions attached to it.

1. Leaving the sin immediately
2. Regretting or being remorseful for having committed the sin
3. Resolving not to return to the sin.
4. Making amends to those you have wronged. If it relates to the rights of another person, then one return the right or property one wrongly took.

He should give up the sin for the sake of Allah alone, and not for any other reason such inability to do it or repeat it, or fear of what people think or say. If his repentance is sincere, then he can expect his sin be forgiven.

Seeking Allah's Forgiveness

People often forget the importance of the simple yet powerful du'a (supplication) – Istighfar i.e., saying “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness of Allah). The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) recited this at least 100 times a day. Istighfar (Astaghfirullah) is the gateway of relief and happiness. Whenever you are in distress start reciting it and Insha Allah it will take you out of your anxiety and will put you in a peaceful situation.

Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

“If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.” [Abu Dawud].

In another hadith, Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

“The one who (regularly) says Istighfar, that is, frequently repent to Allah Ta’aala for sins committed, Allah Azza Wa-Jal will open a path from poverty and difficulties. All sorrow and hardship will be removed, and in its place prosperity and contentment granted. One will receive sustenance from unimagined and unexpected sources.”

3- To seek to cure himself through supplication, prayer and remembering Allah; especially by reciting sura al-Fatiha and the last three suras of the Qur’an.

4- Give Sadaqah (Charity):

Abu Umamah (may Allah reward him) said: the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said:

“Treat your sick by giving Sadaqah (charity).” (Authenticated by Al-Albani)

4- Recite lots of Qur'an

Qur’an has healing power for the believers. This includes healing the heart (mental or spiritual disease) and physical healing.

Allah Almighty says,

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. (82)
[Qur'an, al-Isra’ 17:82]

And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said, "Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?" Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place. (44)
[Qur'an, al-Fussilat 41:44]

..And [Allah] shall heal the breast of the believers.
[Qur'an, Tawbah 9:14]

The Qur’an is the complete healing for all mental, spiritual and physical diseases, all diseases of this world and the Hereafter. But not everyone is guided to use it for the purpose of healing. If the sick person uses the Qur’an for healing in the proper way, and applies it to his disease with sincerity, faith, complete acceptance and firm conviction, fulfilling all its conditions, then no disease can resist it.

5- Do Lots of Salawat (sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wassallam)

There are numerous benefits and rewards of salawat

Ubayy ibn Ka`b relates: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I send much blessings on you. What proportion of my prayer should I devote to you?” He said, “As much as you like.” I said, “A quarter?” He said, “As much as you like, and if you increased it would only be better for you.” I said, “Then a half?” He said, “As much as you like and if you increased then it would only be better for you.” I said, “Then two thirds?” He said, “As much as you like and if you increased it would only be better for you.” I said, “I'll devote all of my prayers to sending blessings on you.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “In that case it will suffice you from your worries and your sins will be forgiven. “ [Tirmidhi]

Someone afflicted with sickness should avoid the following:

1- Lying to visitors, by saying things like, “I haven’t slept all night,” or “I haven’t eaten a bite of food,” when this is not or accurate.

2- Looking to visitors greedily, eyeing out their gifts.

3- To pretend to be sicker than he really is, for example by lying down upon the entry of visitors after one had been sitting normally.

4- To be angry over the services of those tending to one, for example by saying, “What bad food you have made!”

Someone of the early Muslims would avoid these sins by avoiding visitors. Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad is reported to have said, “I wish to get sick without any visitors.”

May Allah forgive our sins and grant those who are sick shifa'(cure) and forgive their sins. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wassallam.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
