Who Gets Forgiven?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Who gets forgiven according to the Quran?

Those who sincerely repent

Being truly sorry and willing to turn away from sin (being sure to ask for help in overcoming this sin) is an essential early step in the forgiveness process.

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allah? – and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know. [Quran, AleImran 3 :135]

O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. . .  [Quran, An-Najm 66 :8]

He said, “My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me,” and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.  [Quran, Al-Qasas 28 :16]

Those who ask

As simple as this step seems, many find it a hard one to take! Set aside your pride and folly and ask Allah to forgive you.

Then depart from the place from where [all] the people depart and ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [Quran, Al-Baqarah 2 :199]

Those who believe— in Allah, the message, the messenger, the angels, and the prophets

If you don’t believe, the forgiveness process has no meaning for you.

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers” . . . [Quran, Al-Baqarah 2 :285]

Those who obey

Repenting and seeking forgiveness are part of obedience.

And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.” [Quran, Al-Baqarah 2 :285]

People of every race, and nationality, and allegiance

That’s right— no one is excluded.

But the Jews and the Christians say, “We are the children of Allah and His beloved.” Say, “Then why does He punish you for your sins?” Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created. He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and to Him is the [final] destination. [Quran, Al-Mai'da 5 :18]

Those who accept the guidance of Allah

If you refuse to accept the Creator’s guidance, you’ll continue to go astray without repenting.

Ask forgiveness for them, [O Muhammad], or do not ask forgiveness for them. If you should ask forgiveness for them seventy times – never will Allah forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people. [Quran, At-Tawbah 9 :80]

Those who value forgiveness

Is being forgiven more important to you than winning worldly success?

[Noah] said, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers.” [Quran, Hud 11 :47]

Those who choose the good

Allah loves those who love goodness, and forgives them readily.

Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so – for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward. [Quran, Al-Ahzab 33 :35]

Those who dedicate their lives to serving Allah and helping others

But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided – it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision. [Quran, Al-Anfal 8 :74]

Those who forgive others

When you’ve been granted mercy, be sure to extend it to others.

And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive...[Quran, Ash-Shura 42:37]

May Allah make us of those who purify themselves and oft repentant and forgive and pardon us. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and is Most Wise, and He alone grants success, and to Him is the final return of all.

Wassalaam
