Haya' (Modesty), a Great Trait of a Believer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Haya' (modesty) is one of the great traits of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace). The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was more shy (pious shyness from committing religious indiscretions) than a veiled virgin girl.

Narrated `Abdullah ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with both father and son):

The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed by a man who was admonishing his brother regarding Haya' and was saying, "You are very shy, and I am afraid that might harm you." On that, Allah's Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "Leave him, for Haya' is (a part) of Faith."

Modesty only comes with good. Indecency would not be in anything except disgrace. This is something that all people in all times and especially young people growing up in our times should know that being shy is good thing. Do not let people lie to you and rip that modesty from you. We live in a time where a lot of people have no idea what it means to be modest. Modesty is a beautiful thing in the way that we speak, dress and carry ourselves.

People with modesty are very quick to have opening in the religion. This is something we have to help the young people to preserve. We have to protect ourselves from the things that we say and the things that we do.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) says, "Al-Haya' is a branch of Faith." Modesty is from the various things that lead to and strengthen the foundation of faith (iman), and that it prevents one from doing indecencies and it causes one to do all the different types of good.

Haya' is one of the great signs that someone has the first degree of vigilance.

So have modesty before your Lord and make sure He never sees you in the things that He has forbidden. The eyes are created to see the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) and to see Allah in a way that is befitting of Him without any modality. Know that the heart is created to know Allah. There is no way to see the Noble Countenance of our Lord and to see the radiant face of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) until we purify our eyes from the haram (forbidden), until we protect ourselves from the makruh (offensive), and until we limit our eyes from seeing at things that is mubah (permissible), because if we see too many of the permissible too often, that will clutter the heart.

May Allah grant us haya', and purify our eyes and our hearts from anything that is displeasing to Him. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and is Most Wise, and He alone grants success, and to Him is the final return of all.

Wassalaam
