Know The 99 Names Of Allah -- Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says,

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.  [Quran, Al A'raf 7:180]

Narrated Abu Hurairah: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah has ninety-nine Names, one-hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise." To count something means to know it by heart. [Sahih Bukhari]

Allah's mercy bestowed on all His creatures is seen in everything we lay eyes on -- in the sun that provides light and heat, and in the air and water that are essential for all the living.

Two of Allah's attributes are derived from the word for mercy. They are Ar-Rahman (the One who is filled with mercy) and Ar-Rahim (the One who is consistently merciful). These two attributes are mentioned in the phrase recited at the beginning of 113 chapters of the Quran --

This phrase is a continuous reminder for the reader of Allah's endless mercy and great bounties

An entire chapter in the Quran is named after Allah's divine attribute Ar-Rahman

Allah assures us that whoever commits a sin will be forgiven if he repents and ceases this act. Allah says,

And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful." [Quran, Al An-'am 6:54]

This verse is affirmed by the narration of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, in which he said that Allah said:

“My mercy prevails over My wrath.”

[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful. (49) And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment. (50) [Quran, Al Hijr 15:49-50]

If we break down the two verses, there is a lot of emphasis in the first. So much weight is given to His mercy than His punishment.

Reward for kindness and compassion was also assured by the the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam,

“The merciful are shown mercy by the All-Merciful. Show mercy to those on earth, and He Who is in heaven will show mercy unto you” (As-Suyuti).

We don't always get a lot of the things we want. But knowing Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim is the One who withholds it, we are comforted and consoled.

When you are going after something and you don't get it, when you lose a loved one or something you like, knowing Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim is the One who is more merciful to you than you to yourself, it will completely change your perspective.

A person who knows he is the servant of Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim will always give him hope and inspiration.

May Allah have mercy on us and the Ummah. Aameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and is Most Wise, and He alone grants success, and to Him is the final return of all.

Wassalaam
