Worship/Ibadah
Feeling Unmotivated?
Being unmotivated or lazy refers to a lack of energy and enthusiasm of doing something that you should have energy and enthusiasm for.
Allah reminds us in the Quran that we were not created except to worship Him.
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. [Quran, Adh-Dhariyat 51:56]
How eager are you really to pray? How
many times can’t you get yourself to read the Qur’an? Or to even do
Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) daily, which hardly takes a physical effort
at all? If you lack that eagerness and motivation to do even these
things, it's time to do something about it.
The word lazy has many different layers; it is an actual (spiritual) disease – even not often recognised as such- and one of the most common, seemingly effective tricks of shaytan. So, it's time to battle back.
Some of the ways to battle laziness
1. Re-ignite your desire to seek and convey knowledge
Both the community and individual can suffer from being ‘lazy’ in the
importance we attach to seeking and conveying knowledge.
Use these supplications from the Quran and of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam
regularly and teach it to children and others.
رَّبِّ زِدۡنِي عِلۡمًا – Rabbi Zidni Ilma’ (O my Lord! increase me in knowledge) Allah, the Most High, did not order the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wasallam with request for increase in anything except for an increase in knowledge. [Fat’h-al-Bari: 1/141]
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam used to say in the morning:
اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَّافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُّتَقَبَّلًا
[Allaahumma innee as’aluka ‘ilman naafia’, wa rizqan tayyibaa, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalaa]
(O Allah! Indeed, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and a good (Halal) provision, and actions which are accepted). [At-Tabarani]
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said:
اَللّٰهُمَّ انْفَعْنِيْ بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِيْ وَعَلِّمْنِيْ مَا يَنْفَعُنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ عِلْمًا تَنْفَعُنِيْ بِهِ
[Allahumm’an fa’nee bi-maa ‘allam-ta-nee wa ‘allim-nee maa yanfa’u-nee war zuq-nee ‘ilman tanfa’u-nee bihee]
(O Allah! Benefit me with what You have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me, and grant me knowledge which will benefit me.) [Al-Hakim, Bayhaqi, At-Tabarani]
2. See the reality of Rizq (provisions)
Financially, we can also be lazy, as a community or individual. From being active in trade and entrepreneurship, many don’t aspire to engage or excel in trade.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said: “By Him in Whose Hand my life is, it is better for anyone of you to take a rope and cut the wood (from the forest) and carry it over his back and sell it (as a means of earning his living) rather than to ask a person for something and that person may give him or not. [Bukhari]
Another level of financial laziness is by refraining from giving charity, while you’re able to do so.
Use this supplication for triple benefit, both for knowledge, Rizq and accepted deeds!
[Allaahumma innee as’aluka ‘ilman naafia’, wa rizqan tayyibaa, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalaa] (O Allah indeed I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and a good (Halal) provision, and actions which are accepted). [At-Tabarani]
3. Don’t underestimate your body.
Feeling low spiritually can affect your body’s energy levels, just how being physically lazy can affect how you feel spiritually. Leaving certain religious duties can in turn make your body more lazy and weak, while in turn, remembering Allah (Dhikr) can strengthen your body.
Allah, the Most High, says about the virtues of seeking forgiveness (Istighfar):
And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you (from the sky) abundant rain, and add strength to your strength, so do not turn away as Mujrimoon (criminals, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah). [Quran, Hud 11:52]
Use the Dhikr the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam taught his daughter Fatimah and ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with them, to recite Tasbeeh (SubhanAllah) -glorification of Allah- thirty-three times every night when they went to bed, and to recite Tahmeed (Alhamdulillah) -praises of Allah- thirty-three times, and to recite Takbeer (Allahu akbar) -magnification of Allah- thirty-four times, when she asked him for a servant and complained to him about the hardship of grinding corn, working and serving (her family). He taught her this and said: “It is better for you than a servant.” It was said: The one who persists in doing this, will find strength in his body that will make him independent of the need for a servant.
4. Realize the source of laziness and its ripple effect on your life
Laziness in ‘ibaadah (acts of worship) has an effect on other aspects of
your daily life. For example, you have people who don’t pray nor recite
Quran, nor remember Allah, the Most High, at all, those who do so
quickly or little and those who give due time and attention to acts of
worship. This type of laziness is beloved by the shaytan, and he will
try his very best to trick you into being lazy in your religious acts.
The Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam said: “Shaytan puts three
knots at the back of the head of any of you if he is asleep. On every
knot he reads and exhales the following words, ‘The night is long, so
stay asleep.’ When one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone;
and when one performs ablution, the second knot is undone, and when one
prays the third knot is undone and one gets up energetic with a good
heart in the morning; otherwise one gets up lazy and with a mischievous
heart”. [Al-Bukhari]
Your prayer, is the source for many other good deeds, it’s a beautiful,
soul-saving duty to commit to without fail, from the moment you become
of age, until the moment you leave this world, five times a day
(excluding the situations prayer isn’t obligatory).
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said: The first action for which a servant of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayers. If they are in order, he will have prospered and succeeded. [At-Tirmidhi].
This is a clear example how laziness in prayer affects our entire life and afterlife. The fact the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam sought refuge in Allah, the Most High, from laziness, shows how serious we should take this disease of our community, our families and ourselves.
Use the Prophet’s supplication with conviction:
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ
[Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu bika minal-hammi walhazani, wal’ajzi wal’kasali, wal’bukhli wal’jubni, wa dhala’id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal.
(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety, sorrow, disability, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, the burdens of debt, and the repression of men). [Al-Bukhari]
May Allah forgive us and accept our du'as. Aameen.

Want To Retire?
Our life journey is about getting better. So get good at what you do and master it. To master something is a lifetime endeavor. We don't retire. If your goal in life is to relax and retire, then it will happen that way, because Allah will deal with you that way. If you expect to get old and retire, that may function as a du'a and it will happen because you will prepare for your old age and retirement. And when you prepare you are making a du'a. For example, when we prepare for a disaster, we are asking Allah to help us survive through that disaster. If for those that Allah does not want to be harmed by the disaster, Allah will help them through it by the du'a. And those who didn't prepare, didn't make du'a (they didn't ask Allah for help), then Allah leaves them to themselves. They will be struck by the disaster. May Allah protect us. Preparation does not mean having the means but taking the means or doing what you can.
What happens if you want to retire?
In Islam we work to benefit the ummah, humanity at large and all of creation. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam is a mecry to all of creation. We are the ummah of mercy and we need to emulate that.
Allah places us in work, so we work and get better and better at it. For some, that will be worship, for some that will be learning, and for some that will be toil (secular work), or some other things. And many will have a mix of all types of work. Someone who is toiling and actively making the ummah a tangibly better place, it is selfish and arrogant to say "I want to retire so I can worship", or "so I can learn about Islam," because working is worship. We have our obligations and we will fulfill our obligations. For someone who wants to retire so I can worship is like I want to retire from medicine so I can make houses, just like hopping careers, or like someone who says, "I don't want to live in my house anymore, I want to live in my neighbor's house now." What a ridiculous thing to say!
You are just as good here. To retire is to enjoy being a burden to society because you are hoarding wealth and you have taken the benefit you provide away from the ummah. You might say that "I am not doing much now, and I might do more in something else or somewhere else." By doing that, you directly remove an expert from the ummah and replace them with a novice who doesn't know what they are doing. Because our obligation is to progress creation and you pull the world back by retiring. And you have decided by yourself to remove 40 years of experience because you want to do something else.
So if you are starting out, pick a field (job, work), the one that Allah has placed you in. Trust Allah, put in the effort, don't pick bad jobs to begin with, jobs that are a burden on society or causes problems for the society or your own families. Look at what you do, what other people do, what you like to do, and don't compete. When the ummah competes with each other, the ummah hurts. So cooperate with each other. If somebody else is better than you, then let them take the job. If you are better, you take the job. You know yourself. Don't fight people for your own benefit. Don't fight people who are trying to make the world a better place. Be content with what Allah has given you. Work but don't work until you are burnt out, and just waiting to retire.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that whoever seeks a position by their own merit, Allah will leave them to themselves. And whoever is given a job, Allah will assist them. He, sallallahu alayhi wasallam said to Ibn Abbas radhiaAllahu anhu, Be with Allah and Allah will be with you.
I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad sallalahu alayhi wasallam as my Prophet.
May Allah be pleased with us and make our hearts content with Him. Aameen.

This Life Is Not The End
This life is part of your journey. It is not the end. Your own body will take you to that end. All this journey in life, wherever you think it's going, at the current moment in time you feel that you are determing its movements, that's only for a limited time. Then you go to your grave.
Beholding The Quran
Bismillah
Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance. [Quran, Al Kahf 18:10]
Of all the things worth learning, Quran is the easiest to learn because Allah is the One Who is teaching us Quran.
The Most Merciful (1) Taught the Qur'an, (2) [Quran, Ar-Rahman 57:1-2]
And of the things worth remembering, Quran is the easiest to remember because Allah says so
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? (17)
In Surah Al Qamar, Allah repeated the above 4 times to give emphasis and to remind.
And Quran is the quickest to leave you if you abandon it.
Why people lose it? Because they don't give Quran any priority. Many people had good intentions about learning the Quran and they want to read Quran, but they don't follow up with doing it and if they do it, it is not with consistency (istiqamah).
We all desire to be people of the Quran. To be one, we have to go from wanting, to becoming to beholding the Quran. Then only you can become true people of the Quran, the people who Allah called His family on earth.
The first step #1 -- is to learn how to read properly the entire Quran.
The next step #2 -- is to understand it and follow the guidance.
Alif, Lam, Meem. (1) This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah - (2) [Quran, Al-Baqarah 3:1-2]
What are the things we should do for #2? Among them,
1--The minimum is to read Quran everyday
* 1 juz is the minimum for Muslims who have learned how to read the entire Quran
* 1 to 2 juz for student and teachers of Quran/Islamic studies
* more than 2 juz for memorizers of Quran and ulama' 3 to 6 juz
2--Read the translation of the pages you are going to read that day
3--Take a few pages and start learning a few new words for each round of khatam -- do it in a systematic way, maybe just the ending word or words of each verse.
E.g.
Indeed, Allah is with the patient ones. [Quran, Al Baqarah 2:153]
And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. [Quran, Ibrahim 14:4]
Either you just learn/memorize the last word or the whole sentence
4--At the same time, start taking Arabic class so you will be able to have a direct understanding of the verses.
5--At the same time, learn the tafsir of the Quran so you will have a deeper understanding of the Quran
Set goals and plan how to reach them..start with small goals. Write them down in a dedicated plan/goal notebook. Look back daily and account for unaccomplished goals, try again and again...
A business without setting goals and a plan is doomed to fail. Quran is the same. Our goal is Jannah...how to get there is the Quran.
May Allah grant us tawfiq. Aameen.

Let's Read Surah Kahf Today (Friday) -- Giving
Wealth and children are [but]
adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to
your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope. (46) [Quran, Al Kahf 18:46]
The Quran is an active Book, not a passive one. Right from the beginning, from the Meccan surahs that were revealed, when Islam was a new thing and the believers were scattered in this society, the Quran challenged that society in two distinct ways. One was the challenge of tawheed -- there is the one God who created you and to whom you will return. The second challenge was a very simple one -- if you don't care for the down trodden you might find yourself in hell. It is as simple as that because the Arabian society were people who boasted of generosity. They would lay out lavish feasts for guests but they did it to a particular group, the nobles whom they get praises for. They cared nothing for the miskin, the impoverish, the orphans, the traveller, the refugee, because they meant nothing to them. So the Quran flipped it on them and said these are the people if you are not with them, then Allah is not with you. That's why this comes again and again in the Quran right from the beginning.
This is essential to what it means to be a Muslim -- it's tawheed and being with the down trodden.
For example, in Surah Al Haqqah, Allah says about people in hell...take them and tie them in chain of 70 cubits. What was their crime? Just two things --he didn't believe in Allah Almighty and didn't used to urge people to feed the needy. And that's why on the Day of Judgment he has no friends. Allah is the friend of those who are with the needy. If you are not with them you can find yourself in the wrath of Allah. Right from the beginning, this is the challenge of Islam to the society.
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record (25) And had not known what is my account. (26) I wish my death had been the decisive one. (27) My wealth has not availed me. (28) Gone from me is my authority." (29) [Allah will say], "Seize him and shackle him. (30) Then into Hellfire drive him. (31) Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him." (32) Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allah, the Most Great, (33) Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor. (34) So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend (35) Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds; (36) None will eat it except the sinners. (37) [Quran, Al Haqqa 69:25-37]
In Surah Al Muddathir, a Meccan surah, the people of Hell was asked, "What put you into Saqar (hell)?" It is because of the two things again -- "We were not of those who prayed, nor did we used to feed the poor."
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained (38)
Except the companions of the right, (39)
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other (40)
About the criminals, (41)
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?" (42)
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed, (43)
Nor did we used to feed the poor. (44)
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it], (45)
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense (46)
Until there came to us the certainty." (47) [Quran, Al Muddathir 74:38-47]
The mark if iman (faith in the One God) and what it meant to be a Mu'min is that there is a fixed portion of your own wealth that you always set aside just for those in need, for those who ask (i.e. those who come to your door) and don't even ask (i.e. those who don't come to your door). This is the theme of many surahs within the Quran.
May Allah make us of those who are generous. Aameen.

Let's Read Surah Kahf Today (Friday) -- Humility
It is a good practice to recite Surah Kahf every Friday. We live in a
very materialistic world and this Surah attacks the problems of
materialism. The most materialistic people can be the most proud people.
We should not let any pride enters our hearts because as the Prophet
(Allah bless him and grant him peace) warns:
“Whoever has pride in his heart equal to the weight of a mustard seed shall not enter Paradise.” [Muslim]
People, whether as an individual, as a family, as a group, as a
community, as a country, can be so proud when they have accomplished
something -- modernized road system, tall buildings, masjid, house,
academic degrees, children, status, influence, and the list goes on.
Even in religious areas, people can take pride in their efforts in the
worldly sense. For example, someone donated lots of money to the masjid
or someone who started or lead/oversee a masjid project and saw it to
successful completion would take pride in it --"Alhamdulillah, I/We
build this place (masjid)." What have you done to yourself?
[Qur'an, Al-Kahf 18:103-104]
Say, [O Muhammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds? (103) [They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work." (104)
This worldly life is in its entirety a test. What we have been provided with in terms of family, wealth, health and opportunities are part of our question papers. What we do with them is our test.
The real great and successful people are those filled with humility. The mark of them is that they don't take credit for their accomplishments. They give all credit to Allah. Dhul-Qarnayn in Surah Kahf accomplished great things but when he achieved the most of his accomplishments, he immediately give credit to Allah.
[Qur'an, Al-Kahf 18:98]
[Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true." (98)
In the last 2 verses of Surah Kahf, the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) wants to make sure that when we praise the words of Allah, we don't confuse that with him himself (Allah bless him and grant him peace). The only thing is that revelation is given to him (Allah bless him and grant him peace) but the entity worthy of worship for us is one single entity, Allah.
The words of Allah is of two kinds -- revelation that He sends to His Messenger and His instructions (kalimah.) Every "kun" is a kalimah. If the ocean were used as means of documenting the instructions of Allah, the ocean will run out before even the words of Allah run out. Even if another ocean were to be brought out to further extend Allah's word, the ocean would be exhausted before the words of Allah were exhausted. On one hand this is showing us the greatest of the Qu'ran, on the other hand is the humility of the Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace). The credit only goes to Allah, even though the medium of its delivery is the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) himself.
Say, "If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement." (109) Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone." (110)
[Qur'an, Al-Kahf 18:109-110]
The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) praised people of the
last generation, that one of them is like ten of the sahabah. Why?
Because they believe in Allah and His Messenger (Allah bless him and
grant him peace) without even seeing him. They live in the toughest
time, around Dajjal, in the world that is beautified and materialistic
but they pick allegiance in Allah's cause over all the temptations of
the world.
You see materialism dies when someone develops hopes of meeting with
Allah. They don't become materialistic anymore because there is nothing
more desirable than meeting with Allah. You may want wealth luxury,
beautiful things but when you develop inside of you that desire, "I want
to meet with Allah," you lose desire of the things of this dunya.
May Allah save us from the fitans that lay ahead and help us be and raise the generation that bring Islam to the world. Ameen.

A Glimpse of Paradise
The Quran describes Jannah as “Gardens of Pleasure” prepared for the righteous believers to dwell in for eternity. It contains “all that the souls could desire, all that the eyes could delight in …” (43:71). Whoever attains Jannah has attained the “Supreme Success” (9:89)
Jannah is as wide as the heavens and the earth (3:133). The people of Jannah will live in beautiful mansions (9:72) amidst gardens with flowing streams (2:25). Jannah contains springs (15:45), dense shrubbery (80:30), deepening shade (4:57), and bunches of fruit hanging low within reach (76:14).
The people of Jannah will have abundant food and drink (38:51). They will eat fruits, meats, and whatever is desired (52:22). They will drink from rivers of pure water, milk, wine and honey (47:15). The wine of paradise will be “crystal-white, delicious to those who drink, free from intoxication…” (37:46-47)
The people of Jannah will wear bracelets of gold and pearl and green garments of fine silk and brocade. They will recline on adorned couches (18:31) and raised thrones, and the weather will always be mild (76:13).
The people of Jannah will always be healthy and will never feel fatigue (15:48).
The people of Jannah will be in the presence of Allah and will receive His good pleasure:
“Allah has promised to Believers, men and women, gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein, and beautiful mansions in gardens of everlasting bliss. But the greatest bliss is the good pleasure of Allah: that is the supreme felicity” (9:72)
The greatest spiritual pleasure in Jannah will be to see Allah:
“For those who have done good is the best reward and even more (i.e. having the honor of glancing at the Countenance of Allah)” (10:26)
The phrase “even more” means to see Allah, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam explained in this Hadith:
“When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, Allah will say, ‘Do you want anything more?’ They will say, ‘Have You not brightened our faces, admitted us to Paradise and saved us from Hell?’ Then the veil will be lifted and they will not have seen anything more dear to them than looking upon their Lord, may He be glorified and exalted. This is what is meant by ‘even more.’” Then He sallallahu alayhi wasallam recited the verse:
“For those who have done good is the best reward and even more (i.e. having the honor of glancing at the Countenance of Allah)” [Yunus 10:26] (Sahih Muslim)
The people of Jannah will also receive the honor of being in the company of the elite servants of Allah:
“All who obey Allah and the Messenger, then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are! (4:69)
May Allah grant us Jannatul Firdaus, the highest Paradise, and His noble countenance. Aameen.
