In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum
Dear Friends
I pray that you are well.
Our first obligation is to know -- to know our Creator. If we don't know Allah, we will do everything wrong because we don't know what it is that He wants us to do. Mere following people won't help because people might be doing things wrong.
You, yourself have to seek knowledge and continually seek knowledge. We are not talking about just any knowledge, but beneficial knowledge--knowledge that makes you a proper human being with a heart filled with humility and mercy; knowledge that makes you more like the person who gave it to you, Allah bless him and grant him peace. He was the most approachable of human beings, and yet he is the king, and loved the oppressed and the poor, Allah bless him and grant him peace.
When we study sacred knowledge, we have to apply it in every way we imagine, and then we will have given knowledge all of ourselves.
There is no practice without knowledge and there is no knowledge without practice. Knowledge is a trust. If you don’t practice it, knowledge can be a curse rather than a blessing.
We should be people who love other people, who can be criticized and not be affected by it. We should be able to say "I don’t know". Imam Malik had sea of people at his feet learning from him every day but he said "I don’t know" every day.
Knowledge is meant to transform us, our families and members of our communities into humble people with light and mercy, not to transform us into a bunch of arrogant and ungrateful human beings.
May Allah grant us tawfiq. Ameen. Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.
And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
