Fasting On The White Days of Muharram

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The virtues of fasting are immense. Fasting is something which is just for Allah, and Allah will give multiple rewards without measure for it. The hadith says: “[Allah says:] Fasting is Mine and it is I Who give reward for it.” [Al-Bukhari]

“There is nothing equivalent to fasting.” [Al-Nisaa’i]

“The prayer (du’a) of the fasting person will not be refused.” (Reported by al-Bayhaqi]

“The one who fasts has two joys: the joy of breaking his fast and, when he meets his Lord, the joy of having fasted.” [Muslim]

Fasting will be an intercession for the slave on the Day of Resurrection, when it will say: “O Lord, I stopped him from eating and drinking during the day, so let me intercede for him.” [Reported by Ahmad]

“The smell (coming from the mouth of) the fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the scent of musk.” [Muslim]

“Fasting is a protection and a strong fortress against the Fire.” [Reported by Ahmad]

“Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will keep his face seventy years’ distance away from the Fire because of it.” [Reported by Muslim]

“Whoever fasts a day seeking the pleasure of Allah and then dies [i.e. that is the last thing he does] will enter Paradise.” (Reported by Ahmad]

“In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyaan, through which those who fast will enter, and no-one else will enter through it. After they have entered, it will be locked and no-one else will enter it.” [Al-Bukhari]

Voluntary fasts will make up for any shortfall in obligatory fasts. Examples of voluntary fasts include Muharram 10 (Day of ‘Ashura’), 9th Dhul-Hijjah (the Day of ‘Arafah), al-Ayaam al-Beed (the “White Days”), Mondays and Thursdays, six days of Shawwaal, and increased fasting during the months of Muharram and Sha’baan.

We are now approaching the “White Days” of the blessed month of Muharram. The “White Days” are the days which follow nights in which the moon is full, namely the 13th, 14th and 15th days of each lunar month. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace), encouraged his Companions to fast three days in every month and to fast these days specifically.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace), said: “The best (month) to fast after Ramadan is the Month of Allah which you call al-Muharram. The best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.” [Muslim]. The reward for fasting these days in Muharram will also be multiplied because it is a sacred month.

Don't miss out on this opportunity. Please check the moon sighting in your locality to be sure that your fast coincides with the “White Days.”

May Allah increase His blessings upon us, help us adhere to His religion, give us the strength to do that which will please Him. Ameen.

Please don't forget us in your prayers whilst you are fasting and your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
