Ramadhan Day 11 -- If You Are Feeling Down, Remember Allah

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

As long as we are called humans, we will have moments when we feel down for whatever reason-- death of loved ones, sickness, aging, separation, failure, etc. Sometimes that feeling can go for days or beyond. Alhamdulillah for the blessing of Qur'an for the prescription.

Allah Most High says,

Truly, it is by the Remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest.
[Qur’an, Ar-Ra'd 13:28]

One of the great early Muslims said, “Everything that hearts find of worries and sadness is because of what they have been denied of beholding Allah.”

What is remembrance (dhikr) of Allah?

Imam Sha`rani explains in his Lawaqih al-Anwar al-Qudsiyya that its essential meaning is to have Allah in heart and mind at all times. Remembrance of the tongue and worship of the limbs is a means to this. Normally, of course, ends are not reached if the proper means are not taken.

Remember Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) loves you more than your mother does and, although you cannot imagine doing this, one day you will thank Him for giving you that test because through it you gained so many blessings.

And Allah is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know.
[Qur'an Yusuf 12:21]

Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) mentions this ayat to us in Surah Yusuf after Yusuf ('alayhisalaam) is thrown down a well by his own brothers, separated from his beloved father by their envy and sold as a slave, and this is before the test of the women and prison. Why? Whereas the majority of people when placed in difficult times would lose hope in the mercy of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) and despair and give up on making du'a we must not be fooled by the difficult times in our life – that things may get worse and continue to, but we have to remember Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) is completely in control of our affairs and that with this difficulty there is some ultimate benefit for us both on the day of Judgment and also in this world.

...But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.[Qur'an, Al-baqarah 2:216]

Since He (subhanahu wa ta'ala) has placed us in this difficulty, He, too, will remove us from this difficulty just as in the same way as with Yusuf ('alayhisalaam). Had Yusuf ('alayhisalaam) not been thrown down the well by his brothers, he would not have become the financial minister of Egypt. The day he was thrown in the well was the day that his path to blessings was made easy for him. The blessing of becoming financial minister of Egypt, the blessing of wealth and honor and provision. The blessing of prophethood and the blessing of Jannah. Yusuf ('alayhisalaam) eventually saw the fruits of his patience. Similarly, we have to have patience because the day our test began is the day our path to honor, blessings and ease had also similarly begun.

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. (5) Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. (6)
[Qur'an, Ash-Sharh 94:5-6]

The Prophet (sallalaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said “...“Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him in front of you. Become beloved to Allah during times of prosperity, He will know you in times of adversity. Know that what has passed you by was never to befall you. And (know that) what has befallen you was never to have passed you by. And know that victory accompanies perseverance, relief accompanies affliction and ease accompanies hardship”. (At-Tirmidhi Hadith #19 in An-Nawawi's 40 Hadith)

Sayyidi Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi said,

“Be with Allah

You will find Allah with you.”

Be with Allah by loving Him, turning to Him in all your affairs, by obeying His commands out of love, thanks and servanthood, You will find Allah with you, for He is “closer to you than your jugular vein,” and He does not let the efforts of those who seek Him go to waste.

Reciting the Qur’an

As for what Surah to recite, the scholars say that it is superior to make it our habit to recite the Qur’an regularly, every day (even if only for a short amount of time), with reflection, longing and love for Allah, and attentiveness to what Allah is telling us, for the Qur’an is the guidance of Allah to us.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The most beloved of works to Allah are those which one is constant upon.” This is because they change your life completely, unlike short-lived bursts of activity, the scholars explain.

Surah Ya-Sin is very powerful: the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) called it, “The heart of the Qur’an.”

It is also highly recommended to send a lot of blessings upon the Beloved Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), for he is the ultimate mercy from Allah to humanity, and we have been informed, “Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah blesses them ten times.” This is explained to be the least of the reward.

The scholars mention that for those sick or troubled (and others) it is good to recite the Salat al-Tibbiyya, along with the sunna ways of sending blessings and peace:

Allahumma Salli `ala Sayyidina Muhammadin

Tibbil qulubi wa dawaa’iha

Wa nuril absari wa diya’iha

Wa `afiyatil abdaani wa shifaa’ha

Wa `ala Aalihi wa Sahbihi wa Sallim.

O Lord! Send blessings on our master Muhammad,

The medicine of hearts and their cure,

The light of eyes and their illumination,

The health of bodies and their healing,

And upon his family, companions, and send peace.

May Allah make us of those who remember Him at all times, ease our affairs and difficulties, and make our hearts tranquil. Ameen

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and He alone grants success.

Wassalaam
