Ramadhan Day 24 -- Planting the Seeds for Fruits that Never End

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqa jariya (ongoing charity); knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him."

After we die, we will not be able to perform any more deeds and therefore will not receive reward for actions anymore except for three.

First, Sadaqah jariyah: This is any good deed done from which people continue to benefit despite the demise of the person who originated it. For example, the establishment of a educational institution or masjid from which people are rightly guided will be sadaqah jariya for the person who established it. Having a well dug or a shade or fruit tree planted will also accrue good deeds for a person, as long as the well or tree benefits people.

Second, “knowledge which is beneficial” means knowledge imparted verbally or by any other means through which people become better Muslims. As long as people benefit from this knowledge, the teacher will receive reward for it.

A third source of reward is having virtuous descendants. Training of children on the right path and then making du'a for them to be among the righteous is essential, so that after you die they continue to pray for you. The prayer of righteous children in favor of parents is very useful.

Needless to say all such deeds have to be done with sincerity (ikhlas) in seeking the pleasure of Allah Subhana wa Ta’ala. Only when they are done to earn Allah’s pleasure will they be rewarded by Him. If they are done for fame, monetary gain, or any other worldly benefit, then the outcome you achieve in this world is all that you will get for it.

This Ramadhan, there is a great opportunity for us to lay down a seed in this Earth that we can benefit from until the Day of Judgment. And one of the greatest forms of deed is to instill in your children the love of the Qur'an. How do you do that when Ramadhan is almost over? By you yourself loving it. Don't be like the people who abandon the Qur'an.
وَقَالَ ٱلرَّسُولُ يَـٰرَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِى ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ مَهْجُورًا ﴿٣٠

And the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned." (30)
[Qur'an, Al-Furqan 25:30]

The people who do not abandon the Qur'an, they have different personality than people who abandon the Qur'an, even who they associate and hang out with. People who love the Qur'an, that love affects every part of their personality. If you don't love the Qur'an, even if you are reciting it, you don't see any change in your character.

Unfortunately, the reality is that we are becoming more and more guilty of abandoning the Qur'an and we have to be worried about this. Reflect on these questions- Do I love the Qur'an more than the video games, the movies, or social media? Do I want to spend more time with the Qur'an than anything else? Do I want to be what the Qur'an wants you to be? Do I idolize certain personality on TV or movies or the character that the Qur'an embodies, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)? We have to cling back to Allah's Book seriously.

May Allah make us love the Qur'an and make it a big part of our lives so everything in our lives is given blessing and given life through the barakah of the Qur'an. May Allah make us not only love and understand His Book ourselves but also give us the ability to teach the Qur'an to our children and others so they can testify for us in the Day of Judgment. May Allah help those who are memorizing Qur'an, not just help them to memorize the Qur'an, but also help them to understand every word of it and to live that word. May Allah make the Qur'an lives inside our hearts and be our companion in our graves. Ameen.

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi wasallam.

And Allah knows best and He alone grants success.

Wassalaam
