Excellence of Knowledge

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

If Muslims truly realize the excellence of knowledge and its transmission, they will make it a lifelong endeavor to learn and teach others.

Allah Almighty says,

...Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do. (11)
[Qur'an Al-Mujadila 58:11]

...Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding. (9)
[Qur'an Az-Zumar 39:9]

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge. (43)
[Qur'an Al-Ankabut 29:43]

Also, in the Hadith, the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, says, "When Allah desires good for someone, He gives him understanding in the deen. Knowledge is gained through learning." Abu Dharr pointed to his neck and said, "If you were to put the sword here and I thought that I could finish one sentence which I heard from the Prophet before you finished me, I would say it."

He, Allah bless him and grant him peace, also said, "Allah makes the way to the Garden easy for whoever treads a path in search of knowledge." [Muslim]

'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, stated, "Knowledge is better than riches, for knowledge guards you while you guard riches. Knowledge governs while riches are governed. Riches diminish with spending but knowledge increases with it."

Traveling on the path to knowledge refers both to walking along an actual pathway, such as going on foot to the assemblies of the `ulama, as well as to following a metaphysical road, such as studying and memorizing.

Knowledge is the basis of all good; it generates actions that are based on the commandments of Allah and the instructions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace. Every Muslim must instill in his mind a desire to seek knowledge.

...And say: My Lord increase me in knowledge.
[Qur'an Ta-Ha 20:114]

...Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is the most godfearing of you. God is All-knowing, All-aware. (13)
[Qur'an Al-Hujurat 49:13]

Without knowledge you will not fear Allah and you will not understand.

And among people and moving creatures and grazing livestock are various colors similarly. Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving. (28)
[Qur'an Fatir 35:28]

The people of knowledge are the heirs of the Prophets and they inherit knowledge.

Abu Darda' said that he heard the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying, "The 'ulama (scholars) are heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets do not leave an inheritance of Dirhams and Dinars but (they left) only knowledge. He who acquires knowledge acquires a vast portion." (Related by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)

Abu Umamah relates that the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A learned one is as much above an (ordinary) worshiper as I am above the least of you; and he added: Allah, His angels and all those in the heavens and in the earth, even the ants in their holes and the fish in the water, call down blessings on those who instruct people in beneficent knowledge." (Related by Tirmidhi)
