Tickets To Paradise--Ticket #17 (Pilgrimage)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Assalaamu alaykum

Dear Friends

I pray that you are well.

The Messenger, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said, “The reward for an accepted hajj is nothing less than Paradise.”

Performing Hajj to Makkah is one of the crucial supports of our religion. It is the perfection of Islam and the foundation of the religion.

On the day of Hajj, Allah revealed the following verse:

ٱلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمَ دِينًا

...This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion... (Qur'an Ma'ida 5:3)

It is an act of worship that is obligatory once in a lifetime on the morally responsible Muslim (sane adult) who has the ability to perform hajj. Many Muslims only perform it once in their life time, although there are many who perform it more than once.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka: Full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings: (96) In it are Signs Manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures. (Qur'an AleImran 3:96-97)

Before one intends to perform hajj, the first thing one should do is to turn to Allah in sincere repentance from all of one's sins and to set things right between one self and Allah, and between one self and other people.

A person who wants to perform hajj, his goal should not merely to perform a valid hajj (with all the conditions and integrals that are met) but rather his goal is for a hajj that is mabrur (accepted by Allah)--i.e. a hajj which the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned when you return from it you shall be as if your mother had just given birth to you.

`Aisha, Allah be pleased with her, reported: I said:
"O Messenger of Allah! We consider Jihad as the best deed, should we not then go for Jihad?'' The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "The best Jihad for you women is Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted by Allah).'' [Al-Bukhari].
Therefore, one should choose righteous companions--people who have relationship and connection with Allah--someone who enjoy worship and dhikr, not people whose hearts are darkened and who spend their time with things that has no benefit in the next life or do things that put them back. The state of these people will rub off on one. If one has righteous companions, one will find it easier to worship Allah and to remember Allah. Otherwise, one's companion is a source of distraction for him. In addition, one should take someone (typically a scholar or people of knowledge) who knows the rulings of hajj and familiar with places and times of different Hajj rituals so that when one encounters problems during hajj, one has someone knowledgeable to turn to.

It is also individually obligatory for the one who wants to perform hajj to learn the rules of hajj and its manners. If one does not do this, one is sinful. It often happened that people spent 1000s of dollars and took the hardships of traveling for hajj and performing hajj, but because they didn't know the rulings of hajj, all these just went to waste. Who is more deprived than one who sacrifices his soul, his wealth and leaves his previous state and his adornment and then returns with forbidden actions and the anger of the Merciful?

A poet said,
He went to Hajj so that Allah forgives his sins
And returned with even more sins

So, one should at least learn the rules of hajj and its manners before one undertakes this tremendous journey for this special worship.

May Allah enable us to perform hajj to His House this year. Ameen. Please don't forget us in your night prayers. Jazakallahu khairan.

And Allah knows best.
Wassalaam
